Had no problems putting this together and no problems rolling the newspaper into logs....don't bother with water or another person...just set it on my lap and keep feeding the sections under the rod and around the reel. I do use a squeeze clip to hold the reel in place and remove it when I finish and take the log off....use scotch tape to keep it rolled. It works great. Can't seem to get the log burning by itself, but stacked with other wood it burns just like a real log.
I remember my folks having one of these when we were kids but not how long they used it. It does take some practice to use. I've seen a lot of people saying it's a two man job. One to feed, one to roll. Not so, just takes a little practice. Leaving a 3 or 4 inch overlap between the last paper and new one really helps get the new sheets in tight and have less slippage. I'm not rolling mine as tight as I probably should be I'd imagine the tighter they are the longer they take to burn. (I'm also not burning them myself I make them for an elderly friend who heats w/ wood.) She says they burn quicker than a wood log (it's paper of course it would.) but they are nice when the fire is down to coals and catch quickly. Getting the tight logs out of the roller can be tricky and sometimes a little tough but by turning the crank back and forth it slips the log a little better then turning the unit on it's side, bracing it and pulling on the base of the crank makes it a lot easier. A little masking tape holds the logs together nicely.
NOT TO CRAZY ABOUT VERY HARD TO GET IT STARTED THEN TRYING TO GET THE ROD OUT ,,,WOULD NOT BUY IT IF I HAD TO GET ANOTHER ONE
It was too hard for me to work with. I gave it away to a friend.
It does not work like I thought it would, there is now away to keep tension on log while rolling it. The legs will not set level. Wobbles when you try to use it. You need one hand to crank, one hand to feed newpaper, one hand to hold tension and another hand to try and keepit from wobbling, Me I only have 2 hands near impossible to do by oneself.
A real hassle. Have to use water to keep paper rolling together. A big mess for just a little task. The value was good , first saw this in a country magazine, and it was $58.I made three logs , and I had paper ink all over me, and water all over the counters . Now it sits in my sun room on the floor ! Don't buy save your money and buy more wood..
This was difficult to put together. Very uneven. The Log Roller instructions were lacking in how to produce a newspaper log. If you let go at any time the paper will unravel and you need to start all over. If you are able to produce a paper log it is very hard to remove from the Log Roller device. I do not recommend this item to anyone.
