I purchased this keyboard for my 9 year old son. He began taking piano lessons in February 2008 but he was actually interested in playing the keyboard. Problem was that the basic table top keyboard we had at home that he had always kind of played around with had keys with a much lighter touch/feel to them. So although he would play his weekly lessons smoothly at home he would struggle a bit when he got to class to play the piano because the keys were weighted. We found this keyboard on-line with the weighted keys and "WOW" has it made a difference! He can now play smoothly on a light touch keyboard or on a piano due to his constant practice on this keyboard with the weighted keys. He loves this set-up and has it in his room. One thing I've noticed about it is that it is much louder when you play the "demo" songs than it is when you turn it up full volume when he's playing. You do have the ability to add speakers but with it being a big system and being a Yamaha I expected it to really project a bit more sound than it does and I know that it can becuase it does on the demo. It is just not quite as loud as I'd like when he plays. If we were to take it out in public we would definitely need a speaker system to go with it. Overall the price is right and my son is VERY pleased with it. This keyboard will last him for a long time and he never gets tired of practicing with the ability to change the sound/instrument and play his little songs of the week over and over again.
