This rare video of iconic post-beat author Charles Bukowski giving a reading of his early works gets a bare-bones release on DVD. Bukowski at Bellevue has been transferred to disc in the full-frame aspect ratio of 1.33:1, while the audio has been mastered in Dolby Digital Mono. Bukowski reads in English, with no subtitles or multiple language options included. Trailers for other DVD releases from Screen Edge are the only extras included on this edition.

5. Belly [Blu-ray] [1998]

Filmed in color, The Memphis Belle has long been held up as a "model" wartime documentary. In a terse, exciting 41 minutes, the film assembles footage from several allied bombing missions into one single representative flight of the famed Flying Fortress known as The Memphis Belle. Though both the crewmen and the filmmakers take considerable pride in the fact that the Belle has completed 25 successful missions, there's no phony heroism, no grandstanding, no flagwaving. As calm-voiced narrator Ed Kern explains, the Belle has a job to do, and it does it, and that's all. The danger facing these Flying Fortresses is underlined, but never overemphasized, by brief glimpses of those doomed ships that didn't make it back. Memphis Belle was directed by William Wyler, who also flew several missions with the crew, manning the camera himself at considerable risk. The overall excellence of The Memphis Belle is even more obvious when compared to the hokey fictionalized 1990 movie version of the Belle's 25th mission.

6. Belly [Special Edition] [DVD] [1998]

Bell, Book and Candle gets a fair DVD reissue from Columbia TriStar Home Video that doesn't offer any additional features to fans of this "nonconformists as witches" movie. Thankfully, all the technical aspects of the DVD edition of this late-'50s romantic comedy are fine. The movie is returned to its original 1.85:1 aspect ratio in a clean anamorphic widescreen transfer, and the audio track is well balanced in a Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono mix. Besides Jack Lemmon's sly comic supporting performance, the movie's best asset is James Wong Howe's lush widescreen camera work, which is presented beautifully on this DVD. Perhaps a future DVD release of the movie could contain a documentary featurette that charts the continued cult interest in Bell, Book and Candle.

Cadfael starred the great Derek Jacobi as a mystery-solving medieval monk. This disc collects three of the episodes from the series that was seen on American shores during PBS's Mystery! The episodes are titled "St. Peter's Fair," "The Devil's Novice," and "The Virgin in the Ice." The episodes are presented in their original broadcast aspect ratio of 1.33:1. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Stereo. There are no subtitles, but the English soundtrack is closed-captioned. Supplemental materials include audio commentary from Jacobi, a production scrapbook, and a biography of Ellis Peters, the author who created this memorable character. This is a fine disc from Acorn.
