In this era of increased accountability, assessment of educational achievement has taken on great urgency. This is particularly true within adult continuing education, where assessment results can directly affect a program's existence. This volume presents an overview of some of the general assessment trAnds within the field. The purpose of this volume is to examine assessment approaches analytically from a variety of programatic levels and to look at the implications of these differing approaches. Assessment issues are presented from several perspectives, including the ways in which different assessment techniques accredit adults' prior learning, the concerns that are raised about assessment in specific program areas such as adult basic education and workplace learning, and the importance of self-reflection and self-assessment. The individual chapters go beyond mechanistic issues of measurement to discuss the implications of cultural differences as well as differing ideas about knowledge and knowing and the implications these ideas can have for both the participant and the program. This volume should be of use to anyone concerned with how assessment issues have come to permeate the field of adult continuing education. This is the 75th issue of the quarterly journal New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education.

This important book builds on recent publications in lifelong learning which focus on learning and education in later life. This work breaks new ground in international understandings of what constitutes later life learning across diverse cultures in manifold countries or regions across the world. Containing 42 separate country/regional analyses of later life learning, the overall significance resides in insiders' conceptualisations and critique of this emerging sub-field of lifelong learning and adult education. International perspectives on older adult education provides new appreciation of what is happening in countries from Europe (14), Africa (10), the Americas (7), Asia (9) and Australasia (2), as authored by adult educators and/or social gerontologists in respective geographical areas. These analyses are contextualised by a thorough introduction and critical appraisal where trends and fresh insights are revealed. The outcome of this book is a never-before available critique of what it means to be an older learner in specific nations, and the accompanying opportunities and barriers for learning and education. The sub-title of research, policy and practice conveys the territory that authors traverse in which rhetoric and reality are interrogated. Coverage in chapters includes conceptual analysis, historical patterns of provision, policy developments, theoretical perspectives, research studies, challenges faced by countries and "success stories" of later life learning. The resultant effect is a vivid portrayal of a vast array of learning that occurs in later life across the globe. Brian Findsen is Professor of Education and Postgraduate Leader for Te Whiringa School of Educational Leadership and Policy, Faculty of Education, University of Waikato, Hamilton, New Zealand. Marvin Formosa is Head of the Department of Gerontology, Faculty for Social Wellbeing, University of Malta, and Director of the International Institute on Ageing (United Nations - Malta).

Developmental education and learning assistance have a common goal: to maximise learning potential for all students from the underprepared to the high achieving. Drawing on important new theories on how students learn, this book provides both novice and experienced educators with practical suggestions for creating and managing learning programs, providing better instruction, and deepening their understanding of students. The authors take an in-depth look at learning assistance programs that have been developed at four very different types of institutions a community college, a technical school, a private research university, and a public research university. Using these case studies to illustrated theories and approaches in practice, the authors show how learning assistance and developmental education professionals can meet diverse student needs, increase accountability, manage resources more effectively, use technology, develop and maintain professional standards, and promote a sense of leadership and student advocacy.

Although there has been a great deal of rhetoric about learner empowerment in educational and community development circles, this book is the first to offer detailed examples of successful participatory practices in adult education spanning a wide range of program settings, such as schools, institutions, communities, and the workplace. The editors join with practitioner colleagues in the United States and Canada to document successes; to network about ideas from active projects, past and present, that have had a participatory component; to share experience, new knowledge, lessons learned, and reflections. The focus is on projects initiated with the intention that greater participation would benefit individuals and groups previously excluded from positions of control. The aim is to provide concrete models and suggestions to practitioners who want to develop the participatory nature of their own activities--from initiation, to organization, goal-setting, and ongoing leadership of adult education programs. Some chapters give detailed descriptions of the triumphs and challenges in individual projects, while others center more on theoretical analysis and reflection on years of experience. All, however, are rooted in particular experiences and give concrete examples from action. Participatory Practices in Adult Education is a vital resource for both new and experienced practitioners--including basic educators, workplace educators, administrators, policymakers, trainers, human resource managers, and community development workers--who want to learn from the practical experiences of their counterparts, and is highly appropriate as a text for courses in adult education and community development.
