David Leivick and Frederick Ritzenberg's documentary Gospel comes to DVD with a standard full-frame transfer. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Stereo. There are neither subtitles nor closed-captions on this release. Supplemental materials include profiles of the performers, and a scrapbook. This is a decent disc from Monterey Home Video that will appeal mostly to fans of the artists who appear in the movie. Those singers include Shirley Caesar, The Clark Sisters, and Rev. James Cleveland.

2. WOW Gospel 2001: 12 Top Videos [DVD] [2001]

Nothing brings the joy of praise into the heart like gospel, and no one does gospel better than WOW Gospel series. Each February the WOW brand brings worshippers the very best that gospel had to offer the previous year, and this exciting release continues that tradition by presenting 12 of the top gospel video hits of 2001. From Mary Mary to Tonéx, they're all here, and if you're feeling down in the dumps, nothing will pick you back up like the 12 gospel greats included in this release.

3. WOW Gospel 2002: 12 Top Videos [DVD] [2002]

This disc offers a dozen videos and performances of gospel music. The DVD offers a standard full-frame transfer. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Stereo. There are neither subtitles nor closed captions on this release. Although there are no supplemental materials of any consequence, gospel enthusiasts should enjoy the performances by CeCe Williams, Kirk Franklin, Beverly Crawford, and many other practitioners of this distinctive sound. There is little here, however, to appeal to the average DVD consumer.

4. Alligator Records: 50 Years of Genuine Houserockin' Music [LP] - VINYL

This lavish adaptation of Ernest Hemmingway's classic novel gets a solid presentation for its release on DVD. For Whom The Bell Tolls has been transferred to disc in its original full-frame aspect ratio of 1.33:1, while the audio has been mastered in Dolby Digital Mono. The film is in English, with optional Spanish and French subtitles included. Bonus materials added to this edition include the film's original theatrical trailer, biographies of the key cast and crew members, notes on the film's production, and links to related internet websites.

5. Chicago Sings Gospel's Greatest Hymns/Back to Church [DVD] [1998]

This documentary offers a look at the gospel music community in Chicago, featuring performances from some of the Windy City's best and brightest sacred artists. Performers featured include the Trinity United Church of Christ Mass Choir, Bishop Clarence B. Haddon, Dr. Joyce Haddon, and others. Selections include "Standing on the Promises," "I Trust in the Lord," "I Know It Was the Blood," "Get Right Church," and 15 others.

6. Gospel According to PJ [LP] - VINYL

Johnny Cash co-wrote and produced this unusual religious drama, in which he narrates the story of Jesus in both words and song as he observes Spartan re-enactments of the gospels shot in the Holy Land. The Gospel Road was transferred to disc in letterboxed format at the widescreen aspect ratio of 1.85:1; the image has also been enhanced for anamorphic play on 16 x 9 monitors. The transfer is sharp enough to reveal the grain of The Gospel Road's 16 mm origins, but the colors are true and this disc looks far superior to the film's out-of-print VHS release. The English-language audio has been mastered in two formats, Dolby Digital Mono and Dolby Digital Stereo, though the two mixes don't sound dramatically different. The disc also includes optional subtitles in English and Spanish. As a bonus, this edition also includes two radio spots created to promote the film, a gallery of stills, and trailers for other 20th Century Fox titles, including the Cash biopic Walk the Line.
