David S. Ware Quartet: David S. Ware (tenor saxophone); Matthew Shipp (piano); William Parker (bass); Whit Dickey (drums). Recorded in New York, New York in 1992. David S. Ware is of the generation of jazz performers/composers primarily influenced by the contemporary jazz avant-garde. Ware first came to the attention of the jazz public when he was a member of Cecil Taylor's ensemble in the 1970s. Yet Ware does not overlook the rich jazz tradition. Tenor sax giant Sonny Rollins was (and is) a major influence and Ware frequently includes jazz standards as part of his repertoire. His sound encompasses the technique and steely tone of Rollins, the breathy sound of Ben Webster, the fire of Archie Shepp and the unfettered, angular cry of Albert Ayler. THIRD EAR is a good representation of Ware, featuring outstanding support from his long-time band and superior sound quality. Pianist Matthew Shipp matches Ware's intensity, yet he provides a lyrical quality that gives the music a firm center. William Parker is one of the finest "free" bassists in jazz (he has played with Taylor as well). This is definitely not "easy" jazz, but is highly recommended for adventurous listeners.

A seldom-told chapter of the Fats Domino story is represented on this collection, which captures the best of the New Orleans rock & roll giant's brief tenure at ABC Records (1963-'65). Fresh from his long run of New Orleans-recorded hits for the Imperial label, Fats signed what one can only hope was a big-money deal and was summarily carted off to Nashville to work with country producer Felton Jarvis and arranger Bill Justis. Inexplicably attempting to increase the accessibility of a man who'd just had countless chart smashes, Jarvis and Justis gave Domino the full Countrypolitan treatment, slathering on the strings and choral backing vocals. As with Ray Charles's similarly produced records for ABC from the same period, though, the heart and soul of the man behind the piano proved too big to be undercut by production frills. Adornments aside, Domino's singing, songwriting, and piano style were virtually unchanged, and he shines through the gloss admirably. Curiously, the last few tunes he cut for ABC found him working in a more raw, bluesy format, perhaps because Jarvis and Justis's previous attempts had done little chart damage. Whatever the reason, these latter tracks show Fats's fire undiminished at the end of his unusual adventures in Nashville.

Noonday Underground includes: Daisy Martey (vocals); Simon Dine. This '60s Britpop-infused release is the first album from former Adventures In Stereo creator Simon Dine and company. With Stax soul, Beatles, and Left Banke leanings left over from his former band, Dine gathered a live band to compile a catchy, groovy album. Bleating horns, lounge melodies, and garage rock tendencies make Noonday Underground reminiscent of French Ye Ye compilations, while spooky theremin electronics, sampled easy-listening chorus-filled tunes, and a female vocal draw comparisons to Broadcast. When the second song, "London" swings in, however, singer Daisy Martney's Janis Joplin-meets-Petula Clark vocals brush Noonday Underground's contemporaries aside. The set also features mellower numbers such as "Marvellous," which continues the retro-futuristic theme, sampling more choral Weather Report-like harmonies. Funky basslines and some hopping organ chords inject a little soul into the mix, making the album a varied trip through retro-futuristic wonderment.
