Freddie Hubbard has been all over the jazz spectrum. On LIVE AT THE NORTH SEA JAZZ FESTIVAL, 1980, he brings it all into sharp focus. Hubbard leads a straightforward bebop lineup David Schnitter on tenor saxophone, Billy Childs on keyboards, Larry Klein on electric bass, and Sinclair Lott on drums into provocative territory. On tunes such as the Hubbard-penned "First Light" and John Coltrane's seminal "Impressions," echoes of Hubbard's Jazz Messenger and funk-fusion CTI years mingle with the complex patterns laid down by his young rhythm section. All the Hubbard trademarks are in evidence in this performance. His huge, clean sound and adventurous phrasing conspire with his brilliant range and rare sense of how to build a solo to a fever pitch. His chops are in rare form as he tears through his own classic "Red Clay." The audience enthusiasm pushes all the players to stretch and the result is a great live recording.

Recorded at Clinton Recording Studios, New York on August 10, 17, 24 & 27, 1991. Recorded during four all-star dates (featuring such names as trumpeter Roy Hargrove and drummer Jack DeJohnette) in August, 1991, as Rollins was entering his fifth decade as the world's greatest living tenor saxophonist, HERE'S TO THE PEOPLE is primarily a collection of standards essayed with his customary skill and imagination. Oscar Hammerstein and Jerome Kern's "Why Was I Born?" is the springboard for one of Rollins' most adventurous and dynamic solos of recent years, while the lovely "I Wish I Knew" finds him trading choruses with Hargrove in a way that showcases both men's dazzling improvisational skills. Similarly, Rollins explores the Gershwins' "Someone To Watch Over Me" with his uncanny melodic sense, making a an old chestnut sound fresh once more. Rollins' three originals, including the expansive title track, exude a similar charm. HERE'S TO THE PEOPLE is the sound of a man playing the music he loves.

WHALE SPIRIT RISING is a collection of three pieces that are elegies in sentiment. They are performed by I Musici de Montrￃﾩal and conducted by Yuli Turovsky. The title track, 'Whale Spirit Rising', by Roddy Elias, features the baritone sax representing the voice of the whale-spirit. The solo voice laments over a low, gently rolling string ostinato, becoming more elaborate as time goes on. Only a small portion of the solo part, played by jazz musician David Mott, is actually composed, with the rest being free improvisation flavored with whale-song. Italian-born Marjan Mozetich's 'Fantasia...sul linguaggio perduto'--literally 'Fantasia on a lost language'--is a sort of elegy to the sounds of the late Romantic Era. Mozetich's new-romantic lyricism has a contemporary flavor in its energetic repeating rhythms, but the colors of the lush string writing harken back to an earlier sound-world, reminiscent of Tchaikovsky. Keith Jarrett, of jazz fame, whose works for the concert platform are often overlooked, wrote Elegy for Violin and String Orchestra for his grandmother. This is harmonically more adventurous than the other pieces, but the violin solo, played by Eleonora Turovsky (wife of the conductor), would fit in with a work by Samuel Barber.
