All tracks have been digitally remastered. Not so much a greatest-hits album as an exercise in what you can do with a few good backing riddims and a plethora of tuneful artistes, DANCEHALL CULTURE is an 18-track voyage through the repertoire of the best reggae and dancehall tracks the Easy Star label has to offer. Veteran singer Frankie Paul, sounding huskier with age but no less tuneful than of yore, contributes "Just One Moment Away," a lovers rock variation on the seminal old school "Cool Down" rhythm. Anthony B's "Third Eye Blind" is a slice of modern-day Rasta delivered in vintage roots style over a percolating "Thai Stick" backing track. A refreshing, airy highlight of the set is dancehall classicist Half Pint's irresistible "Love Potion Number 9," a litany of things with which to do your woman right. Anthony B's coruscating anti-abortion disputation "Love So Divine" is a curious combination of dancehall and polemic that'll be sure to lead to some heated debates on the dancefloor, while "Hit Tune," Guyanese's interpretation of the same rhythm delivered in almost impenetrable patois, is as cheerfully airheaded as its predecessor is self-righteously apocalyptic. For good measure DANCEHALL CULTURE includes a few smooth instrumental dub versions.
