A Week In Hawaii: Vol.5 - Island Jungle

Djam Karet: Gayle Ellett (guitar, keyboards, percussion, tapes); Mike Henderson (electric 6 & 12-string guitars, keyboards); Chuck Oken (keyboards, drums, programming); Henry J. Osborne (keyboards, bass, percussion). Recorded between July 1990 & April 1991. One super-duper barnstormer from the States' finest exponent of post-Pink Floyd space prog. This is a supremely gutsy noise. The guitars are scorched, the rhythms pungent, and the electronics bruising yet burnished with imaginative vigor. All four members of Djam Karet double on multiple instruments, but their individual accomplishments manage to form a stunningly cohesive whole. Gayle Ellett and Mike Henderson weave a tapestry of gnashing chords and delicate acoustics, intertwining these amidst Chuck Oken's authoritative drumming and Henry Osbourne's smelt-iron bass work. This stuff cooks. It's a veritable feast for your sound system--and an air-guitarist's dream. "Province 19: The Visage of War" is a roaring Viking battle that sees guitars careening about the parched landscape of an emasculated stereo field, burning their way through speaker fabric like a blowtorch through butter. "Feast of Ashes" commences with some spiky synth effects and jazzified percussion before the six-strings kick in to upset your middle-ear canals. Lest the unwary think is a bad case of death metal rearing its ugly head, think again. This is sophisticated, composed, truly progressive rock music from a band that means serious business.

Full title: Hits, Misses, Trashers & Crashers. The Small Faces: Steve Marriott (vocals, guitar); Ian MacLagan (vocals, Hammond b-3 organ); Ronnie Lane (vocals, bass guitar); Kenny Jones (drums). Among the slew of mid-1960s British groups to fuse American rock and R&B with the burgeoning tripped-out sound of the day, none have been as unjustly overlooked in the United States as the Small Faces. Compared to the Stones and the Yardbirds, the Small Faces had a low profile abroad; this is a pity, because their unique brand of Brit-pop is distinguished by a keen melodic sensibility, shifting song structures, driving rhythms, Steve Marriott's impassioned vocals, and an adventurous sense of experimentation in the studio. HITS, MISSES, THRASHERS & CRASHERS is a double-disc box set that covers the band's recordings for the Immediate label between 1967 and 1969. Disc one, ABSOLUTELY THE BEST, contains the band's chart singles, including "Tin Soldier," "Itchycoo Park," and "Lazy Sunday," along with B-sides from these singles (which often match the A-sides in quality). The second disc, titled ODDS AND MODS, features the Small Faces at their most experimental. Here the drums/guitar/bass/Hammond organ line-up is expanded to feature woodwinds, odd percussion, Mellotrons, and all manner of studio effects, including tape loops, phasing, and heavy echo. Both discs are a welcome introduction to one of the era's finest, and provide a comprehensive sampling of the band at the elastic peak of their powers.

Includes liner notes by The Millionaire. Peter Thomas was a German composer of scores to an impressive multitude of Western European B-movies in the 1960s and '70s. And were it not for the renewed interest in lesser-documented instrumental music spurred by the DJs and sampling mavericks of the lounge and electronic music movements, Thomas' achievements would have probably remained stuck in a record company vault, collecting dust. Instead, FUTUREMUZIK, a compilation of sixteen mid-'60s pieces that range from themes ("Space Patrol") to lounge tunes ("Monster") to orchestral suites ("The Hunchback of Soho"), reveals Thomas to be in league with such compositional mavericks as Moondog and Jean-Jacques Perrey, mixing jazzy pomp, classically-oriented structure, and futuristic technology. Picture a brass-intensive big band full of young talents early in their musical careers (keyboardist Jan Hammer, drummer Keith Forsey, saxophonist Klaus Doldinger) swinging, cross-rhythms percolating and various sound effects taking up whatever sonic space is available. The pieces themselves are freakish pop variations on Ellington and Mancini, with Moogs and various other modern analog applications (including the first documented use of a vocoder) adding to the wall of sound. FUTUREMUZIK is another victory for the secret histories of twentieth century music, and more proof that innovations hide in the weirdest places.
