Matching Mole: Robert Wyatt (vocals, drums); Phil Miller (guitar); Dave McRae (electric piano); Bill MacCormick (bass). Recorded in 1972. Includes liner notes by Aymeric Leroy. Digitally remastered by Matt Murman & Steven Feigenbaum (SAE Mastering, Phoenix, Arizona). The legend of Matching Mole looms large in the history of the Canterbury prog/jazz-rock scene of the '70s. Drummer/singer Robert Wyatt formed the group after leaving Soft Machine, and Matching Mole's two initial releases indicated a path Wyatt's former group might have followed. This posthumous album of live recordings from 1972 should be like manna from heaven to fans of the band's adventurous proto-fusion sound. Fuzz is the rule of the day as Bill MacCormick's fuzz bass tones leap to the forefront with a sound not dissimilar to that of famed Soft Machine bassist Hugh Hopper. Dave McRae's electric piano is processed through so many effects that it often sounds more like an organ or a celeste. The fuzz assault is complemented by Wyatt's crisp, jazzy drumming and Phil Miller's nimble guitar leads as the band moves through tunes that combine prog/fusion chops with avant garde ingenuity.
