I almost asphixiated myself and our horse with spraying too much. I learned to do short bursts. I also recalled customer services advice. about where to spray. The scent is overwhelming so MUST use outside and away from hay your horse is eating or it is ruined. We let hay stay outside to "dry" then used as underbedding.
Full disclosure, this stuff is potent. If you accidentally get it in your eyes it will burn like acid, and God-forbid you inhale it, as it will trigger a coughing fit like you just inhaled mustard gas. You and your horse will smell like you bathed in the stuff, even with just a few sprays, and your spouse will not find this the least bit attractive. On the plus side, bugs of all species will not find your horse attractive either, and it seems to last all day. It may even get you through a checkout lane faster, as no one wants to stand near you. I'll be purchasing this again!
Holy canoli Batman, this fly spray's scent is STRONG. And not in a good way. While the new scent does smell better than the original, it is not for the faint of heart. I could hear the flies begging for mercy as I sprayed them off my poor mule's legs. Then, my mule begged for mercy as the fumes engulfed us as well. I managed to get some mist in my eye (I've never done that before with fly spray) and it stung like a thousand angry yellow jackets. As my mule and I exited the gas chamber I accidently created, we both gulped in fresh air in relief. Okay, I may be a little dramatic but for reals though, use this stuff OUTSIDE and make sure there isn't any wind! Even well ventalited barns aren't sufficient. I now tie to the trailer in the open when I use this stuff and even kinda avoid that area for awhile. But, it's totally worth it. My mule was getting absolutely eaten alive by flies earlier this spring and this was the only stuff that would get them off her legs and keep them away. It's been a real game changer for us and the new scent is at least tolerable. I had a bottle a year or so ago that I used once and had to get rid of. Overall, it is worth it, so long as you have a sufficiently ventilated area in which to use it.
This the only fly spray I have ever used that makes the gnats unbury themselves from my horses skin and drop off. It is true you don't want to spray it indoors, and make sure you are upwind, but honestly you should be doing that with most fly sprays anyway. I mostly use this spray as a ride fly spray. Even in the bug infested southern summers this will usually let me get a decent ride in without my horse going crazy from horse flies and gnats. I also use it on my horses chest and belly to help with the burrowing gnats. A little bit defenitely goes a long way, and the smell actually doesnt bother me. Just don't inhale it or overdo it.
I do think it worked better than other fly sprays I've tried (many), but not the miracle cure, and as others have said, it's very irritating and made me cough no matter how carefully I sprayed it down wind. Maybe the issue is that I used it too sparingly because of how irritating it was.
