Personnel: Dennis Brown (vocals); Dwight Pickney (guitar); Dean Fraser, David Madden, Ronald Robinson (horns); Danny "Axeman" Thompson (keyboards, bass, drums); Robert Lyn, Handel Tucker (keyboards); Fiona Robinson, Michael Mendez, Althea Hamilton, Paul Murray, Leiba Heibert, Michelle Anderson, Heather Cummings, Judith Bodley, Connie Campbell (background vocals). Engineers include: Delroy "Fatta" Pottinger, Garfield McDonald, Delroy Harrison. Recorded at Music Works Recording Studios, Kingston, Jamaica. Two months after Dennis Brown's untimely passing in July 1999, STONE COLD WORLD was released. Billed as his last work, that designation may have set off alarms that STONE COLD was one of those hastily compiled albums hoping to capitalize on a tragedy. However, that's not the case. Although this is a very poppy, mostly lovers' rock album, it is well-crafted by celebrated producer Augustus "Gussie" Clarke. The 13 tracks are done in Gussie's dub-flavored, bubbly-sounding digital style (though "real" musicians, like sax man Dean Fraser and guitarist Dwight Pickney, are among those credited on the disc). The pace of the riddims is briskly uptempo, and on several, including the opening "Life is a Mystery," Brown seems a little behind the riddim. "Let's Start Something Serious (Tonight)," and "Merry Go Round" are a couple of the catchier tunes, none of which were written by Brown.
