Includes liner notes by Leonard Feather. John Lee Hooker was prolific in his output and this BEST OF does a good job of reflecting the different contexts in which Hooker did his earlier recording. As with many compilations, you have to put up with a complete lack of documentation regarding recording dates and band personel. From the deliciously period Leonard Feather liner notes one can approximate that none of these cuts date later than the early-to-mid-'60s. The cover art still boasts "Special Value 2-Record Set." Be that as it may, you can hear Hooker both solo and with various bands. The solo acoustic "Hobo Blues" harks back to acoustic Lightnin' Hopkins and earlier, while the solo electric "Boogie Chillun" provides a direct antecedent to Magic Sam's showstopper "Feelin' Good." On tunes like "Blues Before Sunrise," someone went so far as to match Hooker up with a low-key horn section and some refined piano work. Elsewhere, the basic ensembles are more directly an amplification of the driving, one-chord boogie Hooker has virtually owned for the last 50 years. Other official Hooker classics here include "Dimples," "Boom Boom," "I'm in the Mood," and "Crawlin' Kingsnake."

Recorded live in Long Beach, California on February 27, 1976 and Springfield, Massachusetts on January 26, 1976. Includes liner notes by Bruce Pilato. Digitally remastered from the original multi-track masters by Gary Lyons (Dolphin Studios). The Deep Purple lineup that was recorded live on this two-CD set from the band's 1976 tour was the latest in a revolving door of personnel that had been through the ranks of this eight-year-old band. The latest to leave was Ritchie Blackmore, whose 1975 departure was solved when James Gang guitarist Tommy Bolin was brought on board. By now, the only original members remaining were keyboardist Jon Lord and drummer Ian Paice. Vocalist David Coverdale and bassist Glenn Hughes were already three-year veterans of the band, having replaced Ian Gillan and Roger Glover respectively. Touring behind COME TASTE THE BAND, (the only album this lineup ever recorded), Deep Purple played a set consisting of material from that album. In keeping with live performances of that time, instrumental interludes are abundant and as a result, many of these songs clock in between six and eight minutes. The combination of Hughes and Bolin gave Deep Purple's trademark hard rock sound a bit of a funkier edge on newer songs such as "Lady Luck" and "Love Child." This is particularly evident as Bolin tossed a few fusion licks into the midst of the 20-minute plus medley of "Lazy/The Grind."
