I purchased one these for my 91 year old mother's double bed about 4 years ago. We decided that we wanted one more for the opposite side of the bed. I ordered the identical model that we had previously ordered. There has been a change however. The lowest setting on the new rail is about 2" higher than on the old model. It is too tall for our bed frame and, if used as is, would make the mattress bend upward on the side of use. Thus the legs had to be cut and rubber feet purchased at Home Depot to make it level. Unfortunately, Drive Medical's similar bed rail was the same in height.
Since I installed the Carex Bed Support Rail I have not had to help my husband get out of bed. It also helps him get settled in bed without my help. He has Parkinsons and this has helped us get past these problem for now.
I am a home health occupational therapist, assisted one of my patients to buy this bed rail and it has been great for her! I was able to put it together myself, although it did seem to have one extra piece in the box. Lightweight, but definitely able to support someone's weight pulling on it to get out of bed. Much better price than other bed rails we looked at, and just as good. Would definitely order again.
The Carex Bed Support Rail works so well that I bought a 2nd one for the other side of the bed. I ordered it due to upcoming hip replacement surgery, but have found that it is just generally helpful. I have a pillow-top mattress with 2 additional foam layers on top due to fibromyalgia, and it's difficult to turn on such a soft surface. The bed rail is handy to give me just enough leverage to turn comfortably without straining. I plan on leaving it in place after my hip replacement surgery. It's just wide enough to give a good sturdy support, but not so wide that it takes up the whole side of the bed like some others. It doesn't stick up too far above the mattress, so I'm able to drape the quilt over the rail when I make the bed, and it's very inobtrusive. It was simple to assemble - no tools needed - and very cleverly designed to be sturdy and secure. The rail has a nice padded cushion on it for a secure and soft grip. The height adjustments are simple to make. I have one rail situated toward the head of the bed, and the other rail on the opposite side of the bed offset so the part that goes under the mattress doesn't conflict (it would be nice if they made them to connect to each other, but it works the way I have done it). The part that goes under the mattress is very long and holds the rail very securely, and the legs have rubber tips on them for a nice secure grip on the floor. I found that I didn't need to use the supplied frame strap (although I would if I used it for a child, elderly, or dementia patient who might put outward pressure on it). Excellent product and highly recommended! Just a simple thing to make my life a little more comfortable. Super-fast delivery right to my home from Walmart.com, and free shipping with a $50 order.
Lack of clear instructions & parts that look identical made this item a nightmare to put together. When it was tied it came apart. Threw everything back in the box and returned it.
