Very glad I purchased this desk mounted re-tractable mic stand. Are use it on a desk in my RV and it stays together and steadier then the $100 Rode one I have. The fact that comes with three different mic holders and a microphone cable is absolutely fantastic, great value!!
The pivot tension screw at the end where the microphone is suspended has trouble generating enough tension to hold the mic where you want it. The screw is small and there is nothing to generate friction; cranking down on the screw will just strip it. A toothed washer would probably solve it, and a larger diameter screw with a coarse thread would be a big improvement too.I also don't like that the arms can't fold completely flat. The thing always takes up space either vertically, horizontally, or both. This is really basically the case with any of this boom designs unless significant effort and cost is put into the pantograph design. What I do like about this that many of the cheaper ones omit is the built in standard microphone thread mount at the end of the boom. Plus it comes with an XLR cable threaded through the arms (nice touch) and a mic suspension holder, if you need one for your mic. If your mic already has a holder with a standard thread base it will just screw right onto this boom. Very nice.Has a decent enough clamp base for mounting on the edge of a table or whatever. Seems to produce enough clamping force to hold well even with the mass of a mic at the end of a long arm (which means a lot of torque).
I only have a CAD u37 usb mic but I needed something to hold it closer to my face. I ended up cutting off the included cable because I just have a usb microphone. The mic works good but the further away it is the worse it sounds. This works great. I just bring the arm in and out depending on if I am using it or not. With the mic really close to my face I sound like I'm on the radio.
This boom arm works fairly well. It is not very long or tall but works for what I need. As others have noted, the attachment point for the shock mounts swivels only up and down, not side to side. So you may need to swing the whole apparatus on its pivot point at the desk clamp to position it optimally. It can be done, and the boom is a good deal at the price. I would give it a 5-star rating if the shock mount could swivel from side to side. The included shock mounts are a real plus.
Pros: inexpensive, sturdy, flexibleCons: cheap material, included XLR cable is not removableIf you're looking for a decent microphone stand for your desk, this is a pretty good one. It is very adjustable and can hold up relatively heavy microphones. I am using it with an Audio Technica AT2020 USB and it holds it up with no problems. It comes with an XLR cable mounted into the arm, but it is not removable, so if you're using a non-XLR mic, you just have to leave the cable there. It's not a big deal, but it can be unsightly. The cable doesn't come out easily, so if you want to remove it, then you probably have to cut the connector to yank it out.It has bolts to adjust tightness of the joints, so if it ever becomes loose, theoretically you can just tighten it up again. For $20, this is a pretty good bargain and definitely a good alternative for people who don't want to drop $100 on a Rode.
