Until it’s casually mentioned to them that they could be together for another sixty-eight years . . . and panic sets in. They decide to bring surprises into their marriage to keep it fresh and fun. I loved this book. It was sheer delight. It also made me think very deeply about my marriage and what it means to say "until death do us part". It was such an original book and in the true style and voice we have grown to love from Kinsella she brings humor and humility to this story. I laughed and was moved by the story. I loved the ending and cherished this book cover to cover! Another hit from a master storyteller.

Sophie Kinsella's main characters in her books simply MUST be major part of Sophie herself! I love her main characters in her books and this one was no different. She is a delightful writer---wonderful escapism --- how she does this with five children is beyond amazing!

Lighthearted and serious. Recommended reading. Dan and Sylvie have been married 10 years and can read each other's thoughts. They were meant for each other. Then, struck by the idea that they could be together another 60+ years, both of them slightly freak out. I like Kinsella's writing style and the wittiness and portrayal of the main characters. But always looming is Sylvie's idealized version of her dead father and her realization that her husband feels less a man because he can't live up to the father's standards. Turns out as the book progresses, Sylvie and Dan are keeping thoughts and worries and secrets from each other and we see a relationship going through a troubling phase. Of course it comes to a head, the marriage is saved and love conquers all. But there is a message here and I enjoyed the story.

It's like Shopaholic with a Rapunzel twist. A husband and wife have a crisis in their marriage, as they realize that they are expected to live a lot longer than they had originally expected. Bridget Jones-esque capers ensue (I suppose at this point, those are really Shopaholic-esque capers, since there have been about 10 Shopaholic books to just a few Bridgets), romantic comedy situations where things don't usually turn out as planned. I hate to say anymore, for risk of spoiling any of the funny, and sometimes sweet, moments beforehand. It's a fun, light read.

I have read all of Sophie Kinsella's books. I enjoy a light, fun chick-lit book and was expecting the same. It started out that way, but took a bit of a serious turn in the middle. This is a standalone book about Sylvie and Dan Winter. They are thirty-two and have to go for a physical for their health insurance. When they are told they will live to be over 100, they realize that means at least 68 more years together. This is a bit nerve wracking for them. How will they keep things interesting for that long. This is when Sylvie comes up with a great idea, Project Surprise Me. They both start planning surprises for one another and in typical Kinsella fashion, things go wrong. Sometimes it is humorous, sometimes embarrassing, but always surprising. That is, until things start to go wrong and Sylvie realizes Dan is keeping secrets that appear to be stressing him out. When she begins to snoop and eavesdrop, she comes to the conclusion that she does not know Dan as well as she thought. Is he having an affair? Is he gambling? Are they in debt? Is he borrowing money from her mother? What is the secret that seems to be pulling them apart.Sylvie tells this story in first person so we never get to see what Dan is thinking or doing. As the story progresses, we see "Princess Sylvie" become responsible in her job and family life. She sees a side to Dan and her parents that she did not know was there. This was not the light and airy story I was expecting, but it was a satisfying read. If you are a Sophie Kinsella reader, you will see the somewhat scattered airy female you are used to, and in this case, she really grows and gets it right at the end. A good novel for a lover of chick-lit. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book via Netgalley.

A special thank you to NetGalley, Edelweiss, and Random House for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I have also had the pleasure of reviewing My Not So Perfect Life and couldn't wait to read Surprise Me. Sophie Kinsella, you've done it again! I absolutely adore your writing and your words make me smile. (If you haven't listened to one of Kinsella's books, I highly recommend it, especially if narrated by Jayne Entwistle.) This witty and at times emotional novel takes a closer look at marriage and how we can still be surprised by those we think we know best. Sylvie and Dan have been together for ten blissful years. They have a lovely home life complete with twin girls, fulfilling careers, and an envy worthy relationship. A trip to the doctor predicts that they will live for another 68 years-this gives new meaning to "until death us do part" when it spans seven more decades together. To keep the marriage alive, Project Surprise Me is born. The couple will surprise each other to keep things fresh and exciting. But is seems that each "surprise" exposes the flaws in their relationship and drives them apart. Sylvie seemingly enjoys her work at a museum even though there are some pretty archaic systems in place-the owner, Mrs. Kendrick resists technology and Sylvie chalks this up to as charming. Mrs. Kendrick's nephew, Robert, takes an interest in the operations of the museum and questions their methods and systems. Is he trying to close down the museum and turn it into two-bedroom condos? Facing changes both personally and professionally, Sylvie experiences a tremendous amount of growth. She adored her late father and has kept up the Princess Sylvie persona he created as a way to honour him, when in actual fact, she is doing herself and her family a disservice because she is not being true to herself. I fell in love with the supporting cast of characters, this is really where Kinsella excels at writing. The tender exchanges between Sylvie's neighbours John and Owen were some of the most beautiful writing in the book. One of my favourite quotes is when John says "Love is finding one person infinitely fascinating." Kinsella's latest work is charming, thoughtful, and simply delightful.

I am a huge Sophie Kinsella fan. I have read most of her books. Usually they center on a young charming woman having several hapless adventures on her way to finding her prince. This time Kinsella chose to focus on a married couple 10 years into their relationship. They both go to the doctor who informs them that since people are living longer they can look forward to 68 more years of marriage. Even though they are happily married the idea of 68 more years together still freaks them out, especially the husband Dan. The wife Sylvie decides the best way to combat her husbands discomfort is that each of them needs to stage a series of surprises for each other. Of course the surprises go horribly and comically wrong and along the way long buried secrets bubble to surface. Sylvie has to confront the reality that she may never have known Dan at all. The book started off slow. There was too much about Dan's distress over finding out that he was going to be married to Sylvie for the next 68 years. It was just silly and it got annoying. Once the book kicked in however and Kinsella's trademark humor appeared I was captivated by the story. Tilda is quite right that steps don't count unless you are wearing your fitbit. Kinsella mined so many true moments of what is like being in a long term marriage like when you catch your spouse googling an ex. The story seemed relatively simple at first but there was a lot more going on below the surface. JoJo Moynes and Sophie Kinsella are two of my favorite author. It was such a treat to read two of their books back to back.

I have enjoyed Kinsella's lighthearted novels in the past and this one did not disappoint. It started of a little shakily, with the premise of a couple suddenly realizing marriage is for life, possibly a long life. Once the husband's behaviour begins to look very suspicious, I was hooked into it and really enjoyed the second half.

I can't believe how boring this book is, and I am a big fan of the author. I have read every book Kinsella has ever written and she usually keeps me in stitches. Something is very off about this novel from the very beginning, and it has very unengaging main characters. The plot is just ridiculous. A supposedly happily married young couple decide (because a life insurance agent says so) that they are going to live to be ancient and therefore be married too long for human endurance, and they panic and start surprising each other? I didn't "root" for Sylvie as I have done with Becky Bloomwood and all of Kinsella's other heroines. I was more interested in the gay neighbors than in the protagonist and her husband. They seemed more realistic.

I was lucky enough to win this book through Library Thing. I am sad that I just could not get into it. I have tried a few Sophie Kensella reads, and I have to admit to myself she is just not for me. I tried this in physical copy and also in audio. It was just a no from me. DNF
