We installed the Morton MSD 2700 over 3 years ago to handle water about 10 grains hard with some iron in it. System arrived intact. Installation directions were easy to understand. Extra care was taken because so many components are plastic. Nothing wrong with that and it is likely better for the water but I did not want to break anything. The system has served us extremely well and has been trouble-free. We have had a number of MUCH more expensive water softeners at other locations that did not perform nearly as well as this unit. We like it so much we are planning to buy an MSD 3400 for another home we just purchased. Again, I will do the installation myself. We were quoted prices by professional water conditioning people for triple the price of this unit. The value in the Morton unit is definitely EXCELLENT!

It is very easy to install, very quiet during regeneration and used little salt. Works better than my old Boss water softener.

Great Unit

We bought this unit and I installed it myself on 6/10/2009. The installation was fairly strightforward, and unit installed easily for me. I have some plumbing knowledge, which helps. The unit appears to be working properly, and we have had no problems with it thus far. I had bought a home water test kit and checked our water properties, both before and after installation. The unit has definitely softened our water to the correct level. We can feel a positive difference in our water. I also added 2 in-line water filters, one ahead of the unit and one after the unit. We are totally satisfied with the results, and I would recommend this unit. It was less expensive than other brands, and seems to do what it is supposed to do. For us, this is a good investment. AAA+++

The installation on this product was extremely difficult, especially as a young mother. I ended up buying $50 in parts and tools and then had to pay a handyman $100 to install the thing. However, living out here in Las Vegas, a water softener is a necessity! It has made a HUGE improvement in the water. I notice a bud difference in my skin, hair, laundry, everything! Just be aware of the installation process, long and arduous!

I purchased the Morton System Saver on line and had it shipped to my local store. It arrived early which was great. The product was easy to install because the water lines were already set up from a prior softener. It took about 4 days to truly start softening our water. So far so good but the true test is how it will function over the next 5 to 8 years. Check all connections prior to turning on the product because one of the factory installed lines came apart when I turned on the water supply and I had a water mess to clean up. I think this product is a good value only time will tell.

Make sure you press RECHARGE NOW after installation; don't assume everything's going to be OK at 2:00am. The nozzle and venturi were not properly attached at the factory, causing water to spray all over the place, shorting out the circuit board. Luckily, it worked all right after it was removed and dried out. Later, I noticed water running into the salt storage tank. The large O-ring and clips that seal the valve assembly to the resin tank are not sufficient. The clips need to provide a tighter fit between the two assemblies, and they can't, as thery're just made of plastic. It took a whole tube of RTV Gasket Maker (from the auto parts store) to get the dripping to stop. (And no, I don't have high water pressure.) My old softener (Alpha Water Conditioner) was in the house when I moved in, back in '84. That's at least 25 years of service. I'd be suprised if this snap-together softener lasts 5 years. Good luck.

Shoddy construction

After almost 3 months of grief, I finally have a serviceable water softener. When I first opened the box, I noticed the screw that holds the brinewell to the side of the softener was sheared off. I called Morton tech support, who sent the wrong screw, but fortunately I was able to steal one off my old softener. Then I had to purchase another bypass valve, because it didn't match the requirements of my plumbing, and my old one wasn't usable. (If your supply pipes terminate at the level of the softener with copper threads, the included bypass valve won't work.) When I finally hooked it up, I thought it was working ok. A day or two later, though, I noticed a hissing sound coming from the unit, and water dripping out of the large clamp between the valve and resin tank. I wanted to return the unit to Walmart for a refund, but had already disposed of the box. So I again called Morton, who told me to remove the valve assembly from the resin tank, and clean and lubricate the 3 o-rings that seal those components. They said they were probably contaminated with resin from tipping the unit in shipping. I did as instructed, breaking the supply clips while doing it, and found what appeared to be a couple tips of lubricating tubes & a plastic shaving in the area of the o-rings, but no resin. I had fortunately bought more supply clips and silicone lubricant when I bought the bypass valve ($45, total). I then hooked everything back up, turned on the water, and it still leaked the same way. I called Morton again, after cooling down for a week or two, and they said I probably needed a new resin tank. Once they figured out it was under warranty, though, they tried to talk me into cleaning it again. I refused, so they said they'd PROBABLY send me a new resin tank and o-rings. About 10 days later, I received only an o-ring kit (and no lubricant, clips, etc.). I thought possibly the resin tank wasn't completely vertical and that could be putting strain on the connection, so I tried straightening it (with great difficulty). When I replaced the o-rings and turned on the water, the unit immediately made a clicking sound so I thought it was still leaking, although no water was apparent. I watched it closely for a couple days and ran it through a recharge cycle, and it appears to not leak now. The clicking sound it makes when water pressure changes is disconcerting, but it may just be the plastic on the top of the unit flexing. I agree with a previous reviewer that the clamping mechanism used to hold the valve to the resin tank is inadequate. I thought the price of the unit was attractive, but it turned out not to be when I figure in all my time and extra cost.
