This is a great product for preppers or for those who like to keep extra food on hand for emergencies or for your year supply of food. Sometimes when getting your supplies in order, you want to have 'meats'. What to do if refrigeration is not be available? You can have this on hand. This product take what could be a bland, blah and tasteless ordeal and turns it into a "gourmet" meal. It's the little "homey" touches that could turn a horrible catastrophe into a tolerable experience. I know that I will be making many more purchases of these items in the future, if there is one...

I keep this on my shelf at all times. It makes a good soup or casserole. I like to replace my meat at times just to eat a little healthier. You can always mix it with your actual chicken to stretch out the quantity. A little goes a long way...you'll be surprised.

Will this replace 10$/lb steak? – no Will this reduce the amount of ground meat you consume, saving money and reducing animal fat intake? – yes Will anyone notice? – probably not as long as you don't totally replace the meat with TVP. I recently purchased both the Augason Farms Emergency Food Beef & Chicken so will be post the same review for both as the only difference is the flavor and color. While the word “Emergency” is in the product name, this appears to be standard TVP [textured vegetable protein]. I purchased this not for emergency food (which can be a good idea) but rather to both save money with hamburger reaching $3.50/lb, and to cut down on the amount of animal fat I consume. This appears to be a good quality product, and can replace one-half or more of the animal products with little or no change in the flavor or texture. If you make meatloaf the chicken TVP does a good job of replacing the veal in the mix. The beef TVP does a good job of replacing up to about ½ of the ground beef used in chili or tacos, and most people won't notice a difference. Will be trying chicken salad next, and possibly tuna salad. The main problem I had was finding the proper way to reconstitute, and how (much) meat to replace in my usual recipes. The web has plenty of information [Google on TVP for > 8MM hits] but most of this is vegan with total meat replacement, as was the TVP cookbook I got from Amazon. My suggestions are for Wal-Mart to include information on how to reconstitute, how [much] to substitute for meat in existing recipes, some example recipes, and to include this as a standard store item now that meat is getting so expensive.

Perfect for those of us who either get snowed in, or are "preppers". I also like to take these products on the road when we go camping. They're lightweight, and easy to prepare !

So far I've made Sweet 'n Sour Chicken using just this product (I didn't use any real chicken) over rice and a Chicken Pot Pie, which I served to guests. Both were very good, and the 'chicken' reconstituted as described. I love that it's so much less expensive than either frozen vegetarian chicken or real chicken, yet takes up no space in my freezer! I will buy again.

This vegetable protein chicken meat substitute is especially good for things camping where you have limited or no refrigeration and need something lightweight. It consists of small pieces something like the size of broken corn flakes. This is one of the drawbacks. When you add it to food, it is more like meat crumbles - almost like ground chicken pieces. This limits it's value in that the "meat" always ends up being and adjunct to the dish rather than a more prominent ingredient. In other words, it tends to get lost in the food dishes. It does have a good meaty texture similar to ground chicken IF YOU DON'T OVERCOOK IT. When hydrated, it looks pretty similar to ground chicken. It is difficult to notice the taste because the pieces are small like crumbles. Does not contribute significantly to taste, but when hydrated and eaten alone has a chicken-like flavor. The small crumbles really limit it's contribution to food dishes as a protein. As a staple, you would get tired of this product pretty quickly.
