Does Whatever You Need it To

I've been using this for some 4K HD game capture and as usual it has delivered, just like everything elgato has for years with me. I have also been using this to assist with my VHS to digital conversion efforts. With it being a standalone device vs needing a connection to PC, I can leave it running at a separate place in my house without needing to take up a lot of space on my PC work space and move the microSD card around to whatever PC/computer I need. The versatility is fantastic.

I'm using A7S and there is trouble in passthrough.

I like external recording but there is a problem about it. My Sony A7S now can record 4K 30p through 4K60 S+, but when I connect external monitor to passthrough line, my A7S can't use 4K, that means 4K60 S+ doesn't support 4K 30p passthrough. I can't record my video when I use external monitor connected on passthrough. When I seperate HDMI passthrough line, I can record 4K 30p again, but when I connect external monitor, it can't. Not the camera, monitor problem. How can I slove it? I want to use 4K30p on my A7S. That's the reason I bought expensive 4k60 s+.

Overpriced piece of rushed tech

For the price of this thing, you would expect it to actually work right? Wrong! My computer is a very powerful PC specs are below. This thing couldn't even run beyond it's lowest Bit Rate. It's a real shame too because I had really high hopes for this device. I had bought this because I wanted to get away from it's PCLe capture cards to take some heat of my Motherboard/GPU bad mistake. Just buy the 4K60 Pro, it may take some more power from your GPU but it at least works. I love the idea of a portable 4K capture card however you need to take your time in building it. Elgato clearly just rushed threw it.

Product is not ready or reliable - save your money

Reviewed in the USA on 2020-06-09T17:00:00

Had nothing but problems since I got this. I've been creating content on Youtube for 12 years and been using the HD60s to record thousands of hours of content. This product was supposed to be my workhorse for the 4k60p console era, unfortunately, it's nowhere near ready for that. I want to preface by saying that I'm writing this after a 2nd unit has also had the same issues. As you would have seen from some other reviews, the 4KCU software is already a mess, incapable of giving you an option to record anything other than the resolution the 4K60s+ is passing through (OBS can for the record), and I've had a significant number of recordings that either visually glitch or have just failed in general. OBS was the only software that produced any sort of usable recording on a consistent basis. This would be fine if the product didn't keep disconnecting and restarting itself during recording, as also mentioned by other reviewers. Ranging anywhere from 5-200 minutes per failure, the device will disconnect from the PC and reconnect, during which time any recording you made will cut, with the risk of corruption. Your screen will go blank for 10-20s and you will lose any footage after the disconnection point. If using 4KCU it will sometimes restart a new recording, sometimes not. For OBS it will just black screen until you stop the recording and de-activate/re-activate the device. For a 3 hour session I average 2-3 dropouts like this, and no driver/4kcu updates or custom firmwares from tech support helped. This is the single most important and dealbreaking issue. If you record a few hours of content a day/week for your channels, this product does not have the reliability to do that for you. I spent a lot of time working through it with tech support to no avail, and was sent a 2nd unit. Same issues. I have tried it with a myriad of cables and different systems, the product simply cannot produce consistent high quality recordings without dropping out constantly. Bear in mind this is the most expensive Elgato capture device you can buy. I have currently given up the dream of recording 4k60p with a USB device. My small form factor PC doesn't have the PCIE support for a GPU+ Capture card combo, so I will have to bite the bullet and wait for either this product to fix itself and see enough positive reviews to try again, or for another product to show them how it's done. I have used Elgato products for over 5 years and the HD60 range is great, this latest device however is a dud and my personal advice is to stay away and wait for non-biased reviews before spending your hard earned cash. I really wanted this to be a success, I would have got a lot of mileage from this product. But the only miles it'll be doing is back to Corsair HQ I'm afraid.

Unfinished firmware and 4KCU let it down
(1)
Reviewed in the USA on 2021-01-08T16:00:00

The hardware itself is superb, sadly that's where the good points come to end. The firmware is laggy and not optimised at all for the device. Regular crashes in standalone and PC mode make using the device as a daily steaming device and capture device impossible. The 4K Capture Utility which allows you to record from the 4K60 S+ isn't able to change the recording resolution, it will only record at the input resolution, again a big issue if you don't want to capture everything in 4K. Also the software is buggy. V1.7.3 causes artifacting on the devices output which is captured on recordings, stick with v1.7.2 if you want good quality images. If you need support don't expect them to be prompt in helping, I've had a ticket open for nearly 2 months, and I've pointed out the firmware and 4KCU issues, and they've basically had me jumping through hoops until the return window closes with the retailer. Save yourself some money and go with the HD60 S+ if you want reliability. Maybe they'll bring a dedicated onboard encoder out without the standalone feature and ability to change recording resolution soon.

Does not work (I've tried 2 of these)

Product will not work in stand alone mode as advertised. Will always drop signal (PS5 and Xbox Series X). I have replaced the device to ensure it is not hardware related. Been working with support but they have yet to solve the problem. I have tried multiple firmware versions sent to me by support but still it does not work. I am out the money paid for this device that never worked for me and advise anyone considering this product to NOT purchase it.

Worst capture card on the market, avoid!!!

This is the most overpriced piece of garbage money can buy. I have a brand new MSI trident computer with an rtx card and an i7. I have enough of ram and also an m.2 harddrive. Still the video stutters like garbage. I literally want my money back. I could have used the money as toilet paper, seems more appropriate than spending it on this hardware. Seriously, avoid this product! When the card gets warm it stutters the capture like crazy. I would rather invest in the Asus tuf capture card or an aver device. This is not good and I will absolutely avoid Elgato in the future!

Worst Elgato device ever released

Reviewed in the USA on 2021-03-18T17:00:00

This is the worst game capture card from Elgato. I used it for 2 months to record gameplay on the Playstation 5 I have a lot of issues with it: - the card is not recognized by the PC, i have to restart the PC and to keep unplugging the usb for 3-5 times until i have signal - The game capture software randomly crashes during recording, usually after 1 hour of using it - If i try to record more than 2 hours (if it didn't crashed after 1 hour of usage) i get a sudden no signal and the record gets corrupted - In the last week, the game capture card started to lose signal even after 3, 5 or 50 minutes, in each instances corrupting the video it recorded - Sometimes the recording stops by itself and then continues but it is not saved after it stopped by itself, and you only get the part that was recorded until the stop - if I somehow manage to record successfully something, the software keeps crashes if I try to start a new recording, again I have to restart the PC - the video recorded is sometimes laggy and pixelated - the recording gets stuck on a frame for like 1-2 minutes and even though i keep playing, for those 2 minutes in the video recorded will be that frame only and then it resumes normally, but my video is ruined because for 2 minutes it recorded only that frame - the card gets very hot after 1 hour of usage I have read a lot of negative reviews about this card, but I didn't wanted to believe them since I was a hard fan of the elgato cards since I used various cards for 7 years now. Don't be like me people, believe the negative reviews this game capture is receiving. I have all my drivers and windows up to date and i am using the device only with the cables it came in the box.

Badly designed or just broken? Dissapointed :(

Context: PC wanting to record PC games on second monitor. I had heard people had issues with combining gameplay audio with mic recording, but as I only needed gameplay audio, I thought this would work nicely. Unfortunately, my desktop PC doesn't detect the HDMI (when passed through) as a sound input. My laptop does, however, the sound is extremely echo-y (and it's not due to my mic being fed in and out in preview). I thought: "OK, this is problematic, but as long as I can make it work." So I tried using the "Line in" audio instead, but this makes a train-like "chu chu chu" sound and makes it impossible to record anything. I tried line out and headphones out from three different sound cards. I do not know if my unit was simply broken from the start or not, but I guess I'll never know. I wanted to be able to talk to Elgato, but with over a week in response time, I have to return the product very soon if I want to keep my money. So here we are, I hope I can buy one in the future if they are able to fix these issues.

Highly unstable - prepare to be frustrated

Reviewed in the USA on 2021-04-19T17:00:00

I purchased this product last week despite having seen a lot of people leaving negative reviews. Unfortunately I can confirm that the unit IS indeed not ready for market. I've used it for two days and I'm returning it now. Here's what's been happening so far: When recording to an SD-card: Sometimes the passthrough feature stops working after you stop a recording and won't work until you restart the unit. Sometimes the passthrough will alter colors. Sometimes the button stops working so you can't do anything and have to restart the unit. Sometimes the recordings don't work leaving corrupted files. What's really frustrating is the unpredicatable nature of this device. Be prepared to restart the unit after 3-4 recordings on average. That's about how long it takes before something goes wrong and you have to restart. Also, be sure to check that the file you recorded actually works. So far I've had 4 files that didn't. I have a very hard time believing that these issues were not caught during internal testing. It's a shame since the device would be great if it worked correctly. This is like Cyberpunk 2077. Looks great, but is held back severly by bugs.
