As soon as I plugged it in, it zapped it's first mosquito. Throughout the night it sounded like an electric storm zapping moths and mosquitoes. To add to the joy of buying this, we have had an explosion of tent caterpillars this year, so very happy we bought his to hopefully zap the ones we miss when they turn into a moth before it lay eggs again for next year. Hoping that is takes care of the moths that will eventually attack the garden too. This zapper also went through a rain storm here and stayed working great. The outside grids are narrow so it will not kill the larger moths like the Tarantula moth or Luna moth. It was kind of difficult to clean the electric grid.
The light is very heavy duty and works great! I'm very pleased with my purchase.
This bug zapper works great. I tried another brand with a screen like electrode pattern. It was not very effective. The screen clogged with bugs. The bulbs did not last very long. The unit itself failed in two years. The BK-40D has none of these issues. The electrodes are an interlacing teeth like pattern and do not clog. Birds also land on the zapper (during the day, when off) and pick out any remaining bugs.
I bought a 1 acre and a 1/2 acre Flowtron bug zapper and they both work amazingly well compared to the other brands I have bought in the past. They are very powerful and take no prisoners. I do not have to blow out the grids on the 1 acre but on the 1/2 acre I do it daily due to its grids are smaller.
So far so good. Zapping the heck out of them little boogers. We really got it to kill the June bugs that are destroying our fruit trees. The openings are to small for them to fly straight in but it's made that way for the right reasons. So, it shall kill what it kills. Heck, I hate them winged little blood suckers too.
This yhing is a beast! lights up bright and brings them in. It is non-stop zapping mosquitos and bugs. Now we spend hours in our backyard and not a single mosquito bite as long as it is turned on. We placed it about 50 feet away and not a single mosquito comes near us.
We have been using Flowtron Electronic Insect Killers for 20+ years. We live on a .4 acre lot in a subdivision with lots of trees. There are 5 of these Flowtron zappers hung under the eve around our parameter. It works great, but it is best to unplug them before rain starts.
I bought this to take out the mosquitoes, boy is it! Every morning I wake up to a pile of dead bugs. The wasps here are giants! The insect lamp killer is roasting them. We were thrilled watching and listening to the zapping sounds of their demise; the puff of smoke as each wasp is zapped is fun bonus. I recommend this; I don't have any where near an acre, but I would not downgrade. I doubt the smaller lamps would get the job done. The pile on the ground are dead bugs from one night.
I live in the CA high desert where mosquitos were never a problem until the larger, invasive, day flying mosquitos showed up. I already had a big problem with tons of biting fluorescent green flying thrips (they also bite in their two larvae stages). My doctor's jaw dropped when she saw the hundreds of mosquito %26 thrip bites, and she immediately put me on antibiotics. My own backyard had literally become unsafe for me. 😕 So, I got this zapper hoping for a miracle. The first 3 days this killed at least 100 moths. So many, so fast, that it sounded like 4th of July and scared the dogs! I literally had to turn it off each time I let the dogs out to pee! Let's just say the cleaning brush was needed a few times. While moths obviously don't bite, this illustrates how well this attracts flying insects. Now on to a CRUCIAL part of this zapper. If you want maximum results, you will need to replace the scent lure monthly (especially during spring %26 summer). This works so much better with the included lure. The first day I was busy, and I just wanted to get it up and working. The second day, I added the lure and the difference between days 1 and 2 was jaw-dropping!! After all the moths were gone, I continued to hear it zapping intermittently throughout the day and night. But the best part is that I had almost no new bites! I placed it in the center of my backyard, hanging under the edge of my patio cover (to give it a bit of weather protection). It's worked through heavy rain and triple digit temperatures. Even though it's colder now, I'm still hearing “gnat zaps.” IMPORTANT OPERATING TIP- You are not limited to only using the included lure size and type. I had trouble finding the exact size replacement for a decent price, but found lots of equivalent lures that come with a “cage” that will easily attach to the outside cage of this zapper. I definitely recommend this, but I wish I had bought it sooner!
I wanted to put this in my shop to deal with the occasional flying pest. It looked good based upon specs %26 reviews, so I bought it. Shipping shows it still hasn't arrived LOL, but it came in a reasonable amount of time. It failed to operate out of the box. There was no shipping damage, and I don't know how these work, so I contacted the seller Skymall. I got a reply in a reasonable amount of time and was able to troubleshoot it via email. Turns out one of the small wires on the small "starter" bulb was broken. Skymall shipped me a replacement bulb, it took about a week. No instructions, but I'm good with wiring. The top cover is held on by 2x Phillips head screws. I next unscrewed the large transformer like part (4x Phillips screws) and set it to one side so I could access the small bulb. I then pulled the old bulb out- at least the unbroken side. The broken one wouldn't come out, so I left it there. I was concerned the wire connections were insulated by what appeared to be masking tape, but left it in place. I plugged the unit in and the light now worked. Can't report on effectiveness yet, but look forward to it helping out during the summer months. 3/5 stars due to lack of quality control. If I wasn't handy with wiring it would have not been usable. I see the price has doubled since I bought mine last month, so I would not recommend it at the current price. Attached photos show the broken bulb wire, the old and new parts, and the new part installed.
