Easy to complete, provides pop-up for further information and an option to contact a tax expert. I have used turbo tax for years but decided to use H&R Block and I have discovered that H&R Block is upfront with no gimmicks on inputting information. If I had a question on an item that I could claim, it was easy to find the answer. Overall completing my taxes this year was easier and cost me less to submit both federal and state taxes.
I have relied on H&R Block for twenty years or so. Its learning curve is gentle, aided by built-in guides and links. For me the most challenging task is getting all of my documents, especially income, deductions, and home office expenditures collected and organized, for which I create an Excel spreadsheet. The H&R B app carries over the previous year's information, so each year amounts simply to entering and/or editing numbers, and pressing "go" after each step. Highly recommended.
The software is helpful. The reason I won't give it more stars is because it doesn't show you the full return all together before it is wanting to finish and file. I have already paid for the software and used the code to start the return, so you don't have to be stingy with letting me see what the return looks like.
Easy to use. Directions for viewing the completed return in the absence of a printer are nonexistent. THAT is frustrating. I eventually found the "form" but was pretty tense by then. The other small problem is when you have to enter any state estimated taxes paid. We don't itemize deductions so missed that entirely and had to back track. That should be brought to filers' attention before they start their state return. Outside of those two problems I found it easy to understand and complete.
I have used TaxAct and TurboTax. Not much difference. In 2022, I sold a rental property, first time to do that. The software left me with questions. It was not clear. I got on HRB chat, and after trying to get my questions answered, was told I would have to pay for it. Not good.
Chronic problems with import of prior tax year, like including forms no longer pertinent, which are flagged and cause problems during Accuracy Review. 'LEARN' (help) popups are mostly useless, sometimes missing (terms not defined in some cases). Help phone line hijacked by phony promotion. Search function inconsistent, especially with respect to Form names (sometimes acronyms, sometimes not).
i could not send my return in to the IRS electronically for the last 2 years. last year i had to print and send a paper copy. this year i had to jump through all kind of hoops and quite a few phone calls before i could figure out what to change so i could send electronically.
Every year I find some error or inconsistency in the software which I have to override. This year they said I could deduct expenses for moving to a new area in order to take a new job. I laboriously got together all the records of various moving expenses, and worked my way through their interview on the subject. At the very end of the interview they told me that the law had changed and only military could take the deduction. I had the latest software update installed, yet they couldn't tell me this at the beginning of the interview?!? I'm sick and tired of having to double check the accuracy of their software and will be looking for another company next year. And by the way don't bother ordering a CD ROM of the software. They don't send it, even when you complain that you never got it and they say they will send it out right away. And if you write a negative review be prepared to have to jump through several extra hoops to get it to go through.
Overall a good product but last year (2021), the IRS said it incorrectly applied about a $3K tax break which they billed me for. Both for 2021 and 2022, there was something wrong with the way the Wisconsin form for nonresidents (form 1NPR) calculated retired military income which caused me to have to manually override taxcut's entry or it would severely underestimate tax due. Military retirement is non-taxable in WI. So it is required to report it...but the software subtracts it TWICE instead on ONCE. Took me many hours to figure out what was happening in 2021...less time in 2022 but was hoping it was fixed so I didn't have to work around the product.
Program is not user friendly. They make it so difficult to review the tax return from the forms. Very few fields on the form allow you to click on the field and have it bring you to the input field. This forces the user to flip through input screens to try to figure out where the number is coming from.
