Miricle-Gro Tree & Shrub Spikes are easy to use when the ground is damp. If the ground around the shrubs/plants is dry, water the area first to moisten it. If the ground is hard the spike will tend to break making it difficult to get it in the ground. I like that the spikes will feed for 6 months so no need for weekly or monthly feeding. I do a April and October feeding with great results. The coniferous shrubs/trees are always nice and green, any flowering shrubs have brighter flowers! Love this product. When my neighbor and I planted trees at the same time we both noticed mine had really taken off. By year three he asked me what I was feeding my tree as it was much taller than his. Another example was a hedge my son planted across his back yard. The soil was poor and the shrubs suffered. I bought him some stakes and they started growing. The stakes are easy to use and store, and inexpensive. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
I've been using Miraclegro tree spikes since we moved into our home in December 2011. As you can see from the photos our trees have grown huge and beautiful as of June 2021. Other trees in our neighborhood are the same age and don't look as nice as ours.
Now that Spring has finally sprung, it's time to feed our ornamental trees and shrubs ! Small shrubs 1 spike at the edge of it's canopy. Large, 2 spikes at edge of canopy 1! Sit back and then repeat in about 6 weeks ! That easy to do !! And it works on leafy and evergreen plants ! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
The product works great but the plastic cap used to pound the spikes in the ground splits on the 2nd or third spike. This has happened for years. I don't know why I didn't think of just using a shovel to bury them before today. Way easier and faster.
I planted sapling Tulip Poplars and Silver Maples two yrs ago. I began using these stakes in the spring of 2023, and the trees are looking stronger with larger trunks, and more foliage this fall. I staked the second round just today, the first day of fall. I think the product may work decent, but the application process is a shotty. The plastic cap is garbage like everyone else has mentioned, and even with moderately soft clay and a pilot hole, the stakes still crumble a bit. I put a thin rubber jar grip on top of the plastic cap before each hammer, in order to preserve the crap cap....it sort of worked. Make sure to follow directions so you don't burn your tree or shrubs. Some of these complaints might also be from incorrect use.
I'm not sure if the trees will benefit from the fertilizer spikes but every spot where I put the spikes into the ground around the trees the grass is dead. There is a circle of brown, dead grass. I hope that this doesn't mean that my trees will die, that would be a disaster for my yard!
I had a hard time driving the spikes into the ground. Some of the spikes came broken already making it even harder.
I have arborvitae trees in my yard. 33 of them to be exact. They did wonderfully last year and I wrapped them in burlap for the winter: upon removing the burlap they were emerald green and healthy: a week later I used these spikes to provide nutrients and foster growth. I read the packaging and followed directions placing the spikes outside the drip line. Now, almost 2 weeks later my trees are all dying, some Of them rust brown top to bottom. This is the only variable outside the norm and timing of using them and browning is aligned. I'm so upset I cried on my knees in the yard.
I used these on a four year old lilac that was about 5 feet tall. Four days later my lilac looked like this. I have used other brands of tree spikes in the past with no problems. I have used Miracle Grow for 35 years on my other flowers and shrubs with no problems. I had faith in the brand. This just makes me sick! I couldn't figure out what was going on until I got on the website and started reading reviews, I will never use tree spikes again!
