I bought one pouch to try it and it was fantastic! I also let a conisour with very discriminate taste (when it comes to Mac and cheese )try it and they also loved it. The texture and flavor was just like homemade. I bought alot more after that. I highly recommend this one if you like good, easy to make Mac and cheese
Mountain House makes the best ever foods. Everything they make, except personally I don't like the scrambled eggs and bacon, is like home made or at least restaurant quality foods. Plus it is so simple to prepare, just add hot water, wait a few minutes and eat it right out of the ziplocked pouch. Great food that is light enough to take on long hikes or bike rides. I also use it when I'm just to lazy or tired to cook at home. At my local store they stopped handling the larger 4.+oz pouches and there just isn't enough carbs in the smaller 2.+oz pouches to sustain a 6' 205lb man on a hike so I ordered these online. P.S. the zip pouches are a great, no mess way to take your trash out with you. Please don't leave your trash behind. Thanks for posting all your reviews, I do value them and I hope mine have been helpful. BackpacknJack
I took these 3 serving mountain house mac & cheese meals on a backpack back country mule deer scouting trip in western Wyoming. I ate one at night for dinner and it kept me going with the help of a little jerky until that time the next day. The meals actually taste really good and fill you up. I am impressed with the product and will be a returning customer.
We bought these to try for camping and emergency use. They' re fast and easy to prepare and really great to eat.We were totally surprised at the quality of these meals. Will definately buy more
As a Ranger for The Dyrt, I got an opportunity to try out MH Mac and Cheese! My partner and I were hiking the Wonderland Trail in Washington (93+ miles around the base of Mt. Rainier) and literally saved this meal for last because we were SO. EXCITED. We literally couldn't stop talking about how excited we were to try it out - calorie rich, lightweight, and mac and cheese in the backcountry?! What's not to be excited about. Although it didn't FULLY live up to our expectations (I mean, we really talked it up in our mind), it was delicious and the perfect end to a long day of hiking - we definitely didn't go to bed hungry. The 3 servings is great after a 15+ mile day and was one of the few dinners that didn't leave us wanting. It was a little soupier than I expected, but tasted like homemade mac. Super easy to make, takes MUCH shorter time to cook than Backpackers Pantry meals, and is a perfect addition to any backpacking/camping trip. Will purchase again, just wish MH made more vegetarian options!
I bought the mac and cheese packs on a bet that because Mountain House used to make LRRP's for us while I was in Viet Nam I wanted my wife to sample what a freeze dried meal taste like. We both agreed the mac and cheese was pretty good. As long as you have water and you don't need a lot of water the freeze dried meals will help sustain you through a serious situation.
Tried for first time this month. Flavor was good, but let it sit longer than the suggested ten minutes to prepare. Even at 15-20 minutes pasta was still very firm/al sentence. Kids will love it; evocative of Kraft Mac & Cheese. Will order again. Be careful - the new Adventure package stays very hot a long time. It also sits well in position for meal prep and eating.
I bought this single serving of Mac and Cheese to try it out. Followed the directions exactly. I found about 10% of the noodles were leathery to almost crunchy. The taste was Okay but something went wrong with the noodles. I didn't get sick from it.
This used to be the only freeze dried meal I would eat. I would eat it every night for days on end when in the mountains because it taste good, the quantity was right and calorie count was high. With the new packaging they have reduced the quantity by roughly 1/3 which results in a less than filling meal. I was very dissapointed to discover this on my last trip. I will have to find another brand that provides the calories to fuel all day adventures in the mountains. With the reduced quantity, the price is the same. Also, the ziplock seal on the new package is worthless. When every you massage the package to make sure it is re hydrating evenly the zip lock opens and has to be reclosed. In the past I have used the warm package as a heat source in my jacket while the food is re-hydrating. I won't be doing this anymore as I can't trust the ziplock closure.
This is easily the worse product I have tried from Mountain House. There is way too much cheesy sauce and far too few macaroni. You take a big spoonful of the soupy contents and there is seriously NO flavor. There are many excellent choices...good, tasty products. This is not one of them.
