We have had the unit for about a week. Does everything it says it will do and does it well. Have a slightly larger area to heat and cool than the specs say but it's still doing the job effortlessly. I hope that we will be just as happy with it next spring after the long heating season. We'll see....
I cannot recommend this unit or even one similar to it. A friend of mine warned me previous to it that she purchased a unit at twice the price and said that it was only cool, if you stood right in front of it, but that was about it. Other than that, the unit did not cool. I went ahead and observed the same behavior. Leaving the unit on for a good amount of time saw the temperature not move at all. The unit was cool directly in front, but other than that, no effect. There is another problem. There is no new air that comes in, so the old musty air gets recirculated. In a room with a computer, after an hour with the windows and door to the room closed, it became impossible to be in the room. Okay, I understand the main problem. The exhaust hose is made of simple plastic. It was quite hot to the touch. The hose was 5-foot in length (collapsable) but radiating a large amount of heat. The net effect of cooling and the heat means a slight heating over time or no change. Any portable air conditoner, if a truly good one would exist, must have two hoses, one for incoming fresh air, and the other for outgoing hot air. Furthermore, the hose should be insulated with padding and designed to not allow any heat to radiate back to the room. Basically, in a nutshell, only a window unit or central air conditioning unit works. Another point is that most manufactures design air conditioners for windows that go up/down, not sliding open side to side. In my apartments, all windows move side to side. I hope that helps.
