Bought this over the summer with the intention of using it mainly at the beach to dig "bathtubs" for my kids. I love how portable and lightweight it is, while also providing plenty of heft and just a sturdy feeling in your hands. However, I've found the sand and saltwater probably aren't the best for this shovel, though repeatedly oiling it does help. Nevertheless, I'll still give this 5 stars as sandy beaches aren't exactly what this tool was built for and yet it is still standing up to this job.
I love my new entrenching tool that it will go great with the other I've bought from SOG.
Perfect utility tool… get's the job done every time.. stores easily anywhere…heavy duty enough in a pinch.
I like these and have one in all my vehicles and my ATV, can't beat them for the money. a little smaller than the GI ones
It Is small. My open palm is a little wider and longer than the blade. But that said it’s the perfect packing companion. With a belt loop on the storage pouch could be carried on your side. And it is, exactly what I wanted. Haven’t used it yet but I have all the confidence it’ll do its job nicely.
Folds up and fits in case perfectly super compact fits in your backpack and takes up very little space would also work great for keeping in your vehicle
I love the low profile, compact and sturdy design. It digs well even in rocky Tejas soil! My favorite feature is that you can bust it out James Bond style if you get the movement down. Seriously, great folding shovel, I haven't tried the pick yet but I assume it is equally awesome.
The e tool is a little smaller and lighter than some of the standard ones out there. I'm using mine for backpacking and it is perfect. The saw edge is more for roots than anything and it's pick is unsharpened but I love it. Great buy for the price. The one downside in my opinion is the lack of a case for it meaning it has to sit in my pack.
Not ideal for packing as it's on the heavy side but well made, easy operation, well thought out, and expecting durable.
Ordered two units of the item. They were shipped to my house fairly fast. One worked and the other didn't. The collar nut that snugs the tool up couldn't be tightened try as I might on defective one. On the one I kept the collar was stiff but would tighten all the way so that you can use it. The shovel "head" is much smaller than the usual military model so note the dimensions before buying. It folds down really small and that's useful to me. Can't comment on effectiveness in use as I have not used it to date. It does come with an attached pick tool and a light cover. Price was very good and does come with a lifetime warranty. I own several other SOG products and found them to be very good values. Good luck getting one that works as I suspect sample to sample quality for product may be an issue.
