My great aunt was having a hard time finding a 5X magnifying glass that would enable her to read day to day things like the newspaper, food packages and her address book. I ordered several on-line for her and this by far is her favorite. She was so happy with it she called me immediately after she opened it and told me if it hadn't worked so well she wouldn't have been able to look up my phone number. I plan on ordering a couple more for her to keep around the house.
I bought both the 40mm and 80mm 5x. With significant effort I can get the 80mm positioned in focus with an image 2x magnified vs same distance without the glass. But that still isn't as clear as simply not using the glass and being half as far away. At closer positions in focus with barely any magnification it is a bit clearer than naked eye, so better than useless, but not by much. The 40mm is worse than useless. Best magnification about 1.3x and no combination of distances makes anything clearer than naked eye. There is tiny writing on the box of the "5x 50mm" (40mm lens). With 2x reading glasses from a dollar store I can almost read that, probably says "cert. no. 580006". With the 80mm glass and a lot of trying different distances, it reaches almost as clear as with the $1 reading glasses, but not quite readable. With the 40mm glass I can't find any distance at which I can see that better than naked eye (meaning no clue what it says).
