4. Richard Strauss was his severest critic to the extent that he later came to disregard his early chamber works. While it is true that the early Strauss shows little hint of the orchestral giant he was to become, the Sonata for Violin and Piano, his final chamber work, is nonetheless a delightful work. One not only hears echoes of Brahms but also a dash of Schubert, especially in the songlike Andante Cantabile. Dvorak, by contrast, maintained a lifelong love of chamber music. In addition to his string quartet cycle he wrote many pieces for violin and piano. Although the 'Romantic Pieces' were originally intended for amateurs, these delightful miniatures are given the virtuosic treatment by Kremer and Maisenberg who deliver performances full of puckish humor but with the appropriate degree of dramatic passion. The great virtuoso Fritz Kreisler was less interested in furthering the cause of 20th century composition and more interested in writing encore material for himself. Although these pieces recall the heyday of the classic Viennese waltz, they are tinged with just the slightest hint of late Romanticism. Always charming but never demanding, these pieces are forever charming and fetching and ought to be staples as encore material.
