Britain's a funny place, but not always in the literal sense. While apparently placid on the surface, in reality England has always had issues with class, race, and socio-political turmoil. In 1980 Margaret Thatcher had taken power as Prime Minister, and the youth culture that had usually reserved its disdain for the dominant Labor party had a compelling new target. Not so coincidentally, in 1980 The Jam released SETTING SONS, their strongest and most political album to date. If The Jam's first three albums are a tribute to the resiliency of British working class youth, SETTING SONS is a call to arms. In the context of politically informed songs such as "Eton Rifles'" and "Burning Sky," even a cover of the Motown chestnut "Heatwave" seems to take on political connotations. The albums centerpiece, the haunting mini-epic "Little Boy Soldiers" leaves no doubt as to the intensity of Weller's ire, with its sarcastic references to shooting to kill for "Queen and country," and lambasting of United States support for Thatcher ("God's on our side and so is Washington"). Luckily the usual Weller hooks are there as well, so it's safe to hum along even without knowing what the fuss is all about.

Not so much a greatest-hits album as an exercise in what you can do with a few good backing riddims and a plethora of tuneful artistes, DANCEHALL CULTURE is an 18-track voyage through the repertoire of the best reggae and dancehall tracks the Easy Star label has to offer. Veteran singer Frankie Paul, sounding huskier with age but no less tuneful than of yore, contributes "Just One Moment Away," a lovers rock variation on the seminal old school "Cool Down" rhythm. Anthony B's "Third Eye Blind" is a slice of modern-day Rasta delivered in vintage roots style over a percolating "Thai Stick" backing track. A refreshing, airy highlight of the set is dancehall classicist Half Pint's irresistible "Love Potion Number 9," a litany of things with which to do your woman right. Anthony B's coruscating anti-abortion disputation "Love So Divine" is a curious combination of dancehall and polemic that'll be sure to lead to some heated debates on the dancefloor, while "Hit Tune," Guyanese's interpretation of the same rhythm delivered in almost impenetrable patois, is as cheerfully airheaded as its predecessor is self-righteously apocalyptic. For good measure DANCEHALL CULTURE includes a few smooth instrumental dub versions.

Senegalese singer Baaba Maal's latest album is the result of a merging of cultures and was a collective effort on the part of several well-known British producers (including Brian Eno) as well as a range of musical collaborators. NOMAD SOUL is an explosion of joyous sound, with a tendency to emphasize the songs' melodies and vocal harmonies rather than their rhythms and beats, which Maal keeps understated compared to many African musical traditions. A mix of Senegalese and English vocals adds to the sense of multi-cultural exploration; "Souka Nayo (I Will Follow You)," has strong Celtic influences, which are more subtle on "Cherie," and the lovely, acoustic "Koni." Maal's breath-taking vocals take center stage on one song after another, yet they seem to be energized and held aloft by the music and voices of his collaborators.

Despite major changes in the musical climate by the dawn of the 21st century, veteran metal prog-rockers Queensryche admirably stuck by their guns and never considered jumping on bandwagons. 2001 saw the release of the group's second live album, LIVE EVOLUTION, recorded in their hometown of Seattle, at the Moore Theatre. The concert featured songs from all eras of their career, and the double disc, 29-track album is split into four separate suites accordingly: EP/WARNING, RAGE/MINDCRIME, EMPIRE/PROMISED LAND, and HITNF/Q2K, featuring something for just about every Queensryche fan past and present. Highlights include the early classics "Queen of the Reich" and "Take Hold of the Flame," such mid-career fare as "Eyes of a Stranger," "Empire," and "Jet City Woman," and their lone top-ten hit ballad, "Silent Lucidity." Rounding things out are renditions of more recent compositions such as "Sacred Ground," "The Right Side of my Mind," etc. The breadth of material included creates a well-balanced portrait of this pioneering band's work.

True to its title, THE ELEPHANT RIDERS by Maryland natives Clutch is a mighty behemoth of sound, maintaining a perfectly frightening level of pure testosterone throughout. The sheer machismo is given a disarming level of agility by acrobatic drummer Jean-Paul Gaster, who employs funky accents and daring meter switches to smarten up Clutch's Neanderthal assault. With guitars as sinewy as they are mighty, the beefy sound of Clutch recalls the thick lead work of early Kiss. However, any nostalgia is quickly dismissed by such modern touches as the wildly manipulated multi-track vocals "Ship Of Gold," the offbeat story telling and tempo shifts of "The Soapmakers," and the Chili Peppper-esque rap of "The Yeti," which catapult Clutch ahead of the retro-peddling masses and into the future of hard rock.
