A few things led me to rate the machine as a 3. 1) The hopper is quite small compared to the previous shredder I owned. 2) the chipper blades are more expensive to replace that what I thought, also compared to the prior chipper shredder I owned, 3) the hammers and shredding blades are lastly much more expensive to replace versus prior shredder. The prior shredder that I owned was a MTD model and it lasted 15 years and I think I replaced the chipper blades and shredding blades four or five times. I think the Earthquake will require replacement more often base on the wear that I've seen in the short time I've used it.
Have only run on a couple of days before winter set in, but so far good. Powerful, and eats leaves and small twigs like nothing, turning them into fine mulch. Easy, to assemble with good instructions, but had to hammer out to straighten the flange on the feeding hopper which was bent during construction or sometime as it wouldn't bolt together without being flattened.
My purchase has proved well worth it. I have one issue, the rubber cap for the branch feeder tube has rubber straps and one of them has broken and is now useless,
Great little machine that does what it's supposed to do very well. Branches feed nicely through the chute. Twigs, leaves & brush feed well through the hopper. Engine starts easily and runs strong. Frame and sheet metal are well made and should last years. Wheels are substantial and roll easily over grass. As with any of these units, material should dry out for a week or so before feeding through the machine.
Multched up a lot of brush, only complaint is the plastic ring around the bagger broke like the third time I filled it. Don't know if a chunk hit the plastic or what. Wish it was a metal ring or something now its a pain to get the bag on. Other then that the machine works great.
