This little radio is surprisingly impressive. The local stations come in clear and the weather alert station is very useful. It can be set to alarm (flashing lights and siren) when severe weather is eminent. There is also an option for no alert. It can be used as a flashlight with two levels of brightness as well as a flashing light for a distress signal. I leave it on the window sill where it can charge by solar power. I have not used the hand crank, but the option is there if you need a charge without any sun availability. I would recommend this radio as it is also reasonably priced.
Love this little hand crank radio. Living in DFW, and in TX in general our whole lives, we know how important a weather radio is. This is my second version of this little guy from Midland and it is a study, reliable little piece of equipment. Have had it come in handy 5-6 times this year and we are only in the first week of April. Definitely recommend to anyone looking to up their emergency preparedness kit!
We recently bought two of these radios. When the alarm sounds an alarm goes off that is very ear piercing. It will definitely wake you up. You also get a visual flashing of the flashlight as well. I like the fact that you can use the crank, solar power or plug it in using cord provided to charge it. Well worth the money.
This weather radio was easy to set up and as we turned it on ready for our Severe Weather Day we immediately received a 'Tornado Warning' for our county. The alerts can come frequently on an active day and may not be in your county but it gives immediate details when you switch it on so you know whether it is for you or not. I feel much better having it as a backup for if our power/cellphone network goes down as we live out in the country.
I bought this about a week ago and it works as advertised. The only con is that there is no presets for the AM/FM radio or the weather band radio. It also does not have SAME encoding, so any alert it receives in the weather radio alerting area will be sounded. Otherwise, an overall great purchase.
