Newair gives you the impression that the unit produces individual cubes. It does not. The ice comes off in sheets and you have to break it up to get cubes. The sheets build up and block the sensor lever thus limiting ice production sometimes. I will be returning the item as it was not as advertised. Better off with a bullet ice maker
I probably wouldn't buy again because you have to constantly chop up the ice to get the small cubes apart. Sometimes the big blocks stack up and trigger the “ice is full” sensor and then they start to melt and it makes it even harder to chop up the ice. It's probably ok if you don't need it for everyday use, but we need this ice maker everyday and it's not ideal.
I've only had this machine a couple weeks now and used it about 4 days in that amount of time. So far it's worked perfectly. From start up to first ice has ranged from 30-45 mins then about every 10 mins after that. The ice is very similar to that you find in most hotel machines. I have it on a counter in my washroom and it's pretty quiet. I docked it one star because for the 1 con I have for it. A full cleaning it takes a bit of time. The opening to the reservoir is small and hard to get my hand in there to give it a good wipe down. The ice dump compartment is easier to access but still small. There are two small filters that have to be removed and the bottom drain lays horizontally at the bottom of the machine. You have to tip the unit to get it to drain the final bit of water out. Then you have to run vinegar/water through it making one tray of ice then empty and run another batch of clean water to flush. It's not hard just time consuming. So, docking it one star may or may not be fair since this is the only ice machine I've owned. Others may be easier or harder to clean. How will it hold up over the next few years? Don't know but if I can get 5 years with out issues I'd be thrilled. Overall I'm happy with the purchase.
We replaced the built in ice maker on our boat with the Clear Ice 40. What a great little machine. It takes up very little room, which is important on a boat. Since it's portable we can make ice anywhere on the boat where there may be a need. As advertised it makes a lot of ice quickly and the ice is very clear. I highly recommend this product.
Review and rating by Wirecutter was that this is the top of the line Counter Top Ice Maker. We do not agree. The primary reason is that the cubes are not individual. They come out attached, as a "sheet" of ice and must be broken up. The second feature was that the cubes would be clear ice. Not so. We have tried both filtered and tap water and neither makes clear ice. This didn't matter to us, but you should know this if it was a reason to purchase this brand.
