Parts Needed for Large Garage Doors

Reviewed in the USA on 2013-10-15T17:00:00

This kit contains the parts needed to modify a standard Chamberlain Whisperdrive garage door opener in order to accommodate doors taller than seven feet. While it is ridiculous to have to pay an additional 20% of the cost of the entire opener just to get an extension rod and a longer belt, this appears to be standard practice in the industry and the Walmart price is cheaper than any of the others I could find. The kit is easy to incorporate into the installation and everything worked as it should.

Unreasonably Expensive

You spend a bunch of time selecting an opener with all the desired features, benefits, and pricing. You then discover that an extension kit is required for an 8' door (like who even has a 7 foot door anymore?). By then they have you, and you'll pay the unreasonable price for this 2 piece kit. I was actually impressed with the low cost of the opener....but this extension bit is little slimy if you ask me. Ditto on the exorbitant pricing for extra remotes. Why not just add $40 to opener price instead of over charging us for the accessories and leaving us with a bad taste....when we otherwise would have had a good one? I had a bunch of slack in the belt after assembly, which you can take out with the spring adjustment on the shuttle.

7 ft. vs. 8 ft. Door

I did not realize until I had the opener completely installed that I needed an extension kit for an 8 ft. door. The opener packaging and instructions could have been more clear that it was for a 7 ft. door. It took significant time to remove the newly installed opener and to re hang brackets. Otherwise, the garage door opener and extension kit both work well.

Great door opener but……

Like every other review here, who uses a 7' door. You have to put on box what door it fits. Bought 3 Chamberlain door openers for our newly constructed garage, and to my surprise, I have to go spend even more money on a ridiculously over priced extension kit, X3. Unbelievable Chamberlain! You make a great product and loose your customer base in the details.

Need 8-ft door extension

I did a lot of reviews and read the feature descriptions of several models from Chamberlain and never once saw that this product would be too short for an 8-ft door. Didn't discover this unfortunate mistake until I had it assembled and ready to install on the ceiling. I drove through my neighborhood and out of dozens of homes did not see one house with a 7-ft garage door. Talked to an installer and he said he hasn't seen a 7-ft door in last 10 to 15 years as an installer. Didn't even know they made 7-ft doors with trucks as big as they are and have been for years. To say the least I was very disappointed in this oversight by Chamberlain. I almost disassembly the unit and took it back. I would have but my son and installed it and the door opens far enough to get my truck in the garage. The door hangs down about 5-inches or so. I feel Chamberlain should provide the extension kit free of charge for those of us with 8-ft doors. This would enlighten them to see that most everyone has a 8-ft door. I'm sure they won't because for people like me that discover this deficiency too late will most likely be forced to shell out $50.00 to $70.00 more for the kit that should have been included in the first place. I would recommend this product to a friend however, I will inform them of this deficiency. The features and quiet operation of the unit are all a plus. This is why I rated this product as 3 stars. Had this model worked for an 8-ft door I may have given 5-starts for now and completed a follow up sometime later.

Great opener bad labeling

I bought a new opener and like everybody else on here I put it together to just to find out I needed an extension. How about a simple label on the box that you will need the extension kit, or better yet make it for a 8 foot door.

Will need an 8ft extension.

After looking at many different reviews we opted for buying the chamberlain garage door opener. None of the videos or installation tutorials show you need a separate 8ft extension since the actual pieces in the box will only work for a 7 foot door. These aren't in use for a while now, would say more than 10 years. Too far into the installation process and now I have a door that does not feet my company truck full of tools in and have to wait for some more days to get the part. All the bells and whistles and the most important piece is not included in the package. This should be free of charge. Another thing is that I already waited for a week to get the threaded D shaft which is the correct part for the opener. The wrong threaded shaft that was included in the package was not a D shape and therefore did not fit the Dhole messing up the thread. I paid this out of my pocket. Very disappointed and might take this item out to return to store. Would have liked to keep it but no telling what else will be buying soon.

Do they even build houses with 7 ft garage doors? This garage door opener is nearly $400, top of the line. And nowhere on it did it tell me to see if I need an extension before I have the whole thing installed. Now. I not only do I have to take it down to install an extension, I have to splice on extra wires for added length. Your manufacturing engineering team needs a serious talking to for overlooking this kind of thing year after year. Especially with so many comments on this page about exactly this problem. Is it a price point deal? In this range, I can't imagine it. I think you guys are just a little too comfortable in your market. It's embarrassing.

Warning: You probably need to spend more

I have owned several houses over decades and never had a 7' door. I was surprised that what I bought was insufficient. Now I have to pay more, wait for the delivery, go without an opener until it arrives, and be irritated just because they didn't make it clear on the box. It is in small print on the bottom of the side near the warnings about potential lead exposure as required by CA.

Why throw away a perfectly good belt for a 7' door

Reviewed in the USA on 2021-02-27T16:00:00

Nowhere on the outside of the box of the garage door opener did it say I was buying a garage door opener that would only fit a 7 foot door. Why not manufacturer one garage door opener that will fit both 7 and 8 foot doors? I wouldn't have to go back to the store and pay $53 more for an extension kit that gives me a slightly longer belt and throw away a perfectly good belt. My house is 24 years old and both garage doors are 8 foot. Long overdue for a common sense change. At the least, add information on the outside of the garage door opener box stating what size door it will work with and the extension kit will be needed for taller doors!!!
