Meets my expectations, I use it when cooking the scrambled egg mix from Augason Farms. It is a good alternative to crisco for making bisquick substitute... 6 Cups AP Flour 3 Tbsp baking powder 1 Tbsp salt 1 Cup Augason Farms Shortening Powder. What you do not use from the mix keep refrigerated in a closed container to extend the self life of the mix. When making Bisquick this way is cheaper than buying the actual mix. You can make biscuits with this mix or you can roll it thin and make something like a wrap. Here are some ideas to use with the wraps from the mix. Hydrate 1 1/2 Cups Augason Farms Bacon Bits, 2 Tbsp chopped onions, garlic powder and salt and peper to taste. Put these in a single bowl and let it completely hydrate. In another bowl make the scrambled egg mix 2 Cups Augason Farms Scrambled Egg Mix 2 Tbsp Powdered milk mix 2 Tbsp Augason Farm Butter Powder 1 to 2 tsp garlic powder Add water to the egg mix, using a whisk to mix as you are adding the water, until you get the right consistency. Scramble the egg mix you just made, (make sure the bacon and onion mix you made earlier is hydrated). After the eggs are done add the bacon and onion mix, (if you have excess water in the bacon and onion mix drain excess water). Take your six wraps you just made and scoop some of the egg and bacon mix you just cooked then fold the wrap over and around the egg and bacon mixture, (something like a burrito, (make sure ends are closed over mix too). Make about six then cook the wraps with the mix in the oven on 350 degree preheated oven for about 12 minuets or until the wraps are done. There is not much I can really say about the shortening except it met my expectations and I give it five stars across the board, so I thought I would give you a couple recipes.
Great Long Term Storage Item.
great for storege
This is a great product for preppers or for those who like to keep extra food on hand for emergencies or for your year supply of food. Sometimes when getting your supplies in order, you forget the "hidden" items you need. Like a recipe that calls for that egg, or milk, or butter or even shortening, and refrigeration may not be available. It makes some of your stored food almost useless. Many of these products take what could be a bland, blah and tasteless ordeal and turns it into a "gourmet" meal. It's the little "homey" touches that could turn a horrible catastrophe, into a tolerable experience. I know that I will be making many more purchases of these items in the future, if there is one...
Nice
Needed for bread mix. Easy storage.
I have used this powdered shortening in pie crust and in breads. I am very pleased with the results. It has a long shelf life, will not go rancid, and works well in mixes. A great product to have on hand.
I purchased this shortening to put back for emergencies. I ran out of oil in a snow storm last winter so thought this would work. Now in pancakes it did, but I had to find another brand to know I needed to add it to water to use, then it was ok. But I tried using it for frying, it just smoked and burned, so I tried water, no good. Then I tried adding the tiny bit of oil I had with it and it helped but what good does that do if you have to add oil? I would not buy this product again. I will try using the rest of it for mixes like pancakes and baking items but not for frying.
I was all set to buy this and use it in my homemade biscuit mix because it would be easier than cutting in the coconut oil I use. Then I checked out the ingredient list on the Augason Farms page. It is made with partially hydrogenated soybean oil. Unless you've been living under a rock for the past ten years, you recognize this as one of the worst ingredients in processed foods. So, unless you are buying this for doomsday, skip it. No, run past it. I'll stick with my unbelievably healthy coconut oil in my cooking.
I am disappointed in this product.
