I started out with a lenovo ideapad U430 in 2013, and needed to upgrade in the beginning of 2018 because the system had advanced wear and tear. I'm a university student how spends at least 3-4 hours a day on my laptop on even my breaks. Much more during the calendar school year. The reason I went with the t580 was for the dual battery system. The MX 150 mobile graphics card is a bit of a boost, but the purpose of it is to help with general rendering for my research. This is not a gaming GPU by any means as even an older desktop gtx 1050 has better benchmarks. I also went with a 256 PCiE ssd, which is great for quiet and quick use. Even the basic option for the screen is crisp, and I regularly leave it on 50-60% brightness. The keys are a dream, and typing has some robust feedback for each key. The heat sinking for the laptop is really quiet good. The left side vents may become a little warm, but this is only due to the device efficiently pulling heat from other locations to excrete out the vent. The matte finish and durable plastic case give this laptop an easy-to-keep-clean look, and does a very good job protecting the sensitive inner components. I have the the external 6 cell 72 Wh battery option, and this paired with the 3 cell 32 Wh internal battery gives me about 9-10 hours of heavy workstation use, and about 14-15 of anything else. To note, I have to i5 with vPro option. I like to play the occasional light game like civilization, and this battery setup will give 4-5 hours of gameplay on a full charge. Better yet, I will be buying an additional 6 cell to utilize the hotswap battery feature and extend my mobile working time. The plethora of ports comes in handy, as not all conference rooms have the same hookups. While not many carry USB C hookups, I like the exceptional data transfer speeds from this laptop. The wifi module is a bit of a dream as well. I picked up usable wifi from a winery 60 yards away. I happened to know the owners and the password, so I logged in to test it. I didnt need the mobile 4g option, so I opted out of it. Ultimately. The durability, versatility, wifi range, and battery longevity make this an absolutely ideal laptop for any university student, and I assume, any business associate who needs a laptop that can fit their busy and mobile lifestyle. Disclaimer: not paid or anything, just impressed over the years by lenovo products [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
In my opinion, this is the slimmest and lightest a 15" laptop with a full numpad needs to be. I can't give up the dual battery setup and the upgradeable RAM and SSD. The T590 has sacrificed too much to gain a smaller, lighter footprint. The T-series are designed to be workhorses, not Chromebooks. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
I have owned several Lenovo ThinkPads and really appreciate Lenovo's T580 with the UHD display and extended battery. The speed, capability, durability, ability to use extended batterys (19+hours) and longevity of the T580 is simply outstanding. Thank you Lenovo for a great laptop! Quick and snappy, the SSD is super fast. Don't know why I waited so long to get one. The screen size is just right for word processing, video viewing and web browsing. Great powerhouse in a portable laptop. Not heavy or bulky at all. The battery performance is about 6 1/2 hours before needing to plug in. Can easily have multiple tabs open and several office dos (Word, Excel and PPT) without a burp or freeze. The backlit keyboard is a must for those long business trips burning the midnight oil. Happy with the purchase. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
This is by far the most powerful and lightest laptop I have every used. It has all the ports I need to control my telescope and camera. With windows 10 pro I can export interface to a other systems so I can remotely control the laptop once I have connected it to my telescope and DSLR camera. (I don't have to sit outside while I take celestial photos). Below is an example of a photo I took last night using the new ThinkPad T580. I really like the lighted keyboard when I initially am setting up the scope for photos in the dark. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
Just bought new Lenovo T580 laptop, have 3 others already in use, this new one is even better than the others!....Faster, more powerful, easy to install my user software, and new devices, can't wait to try it for many purposes.....highly reccomended....Lenovo is one of the best if not THE best! This is by far the best laptop I've ever owned. I wanted an IBM Thinkpad after I saw people using them in the field as a child.. a rugged, professional workstation for power users. Lenovo has kept that 90s IBM heritage alive while at the same time keeping with the line's overall trademark - cramming all the patest features and technologies into a sleek, minimal design. I've had it for a few weeks... Since then, I've used it for Laravel web development, music production with FL Studio, digital art using PaintTool SAI, school assignments with Office, played Steam games, and taken it on a trip. The thing takes like 4 seconds to reach the desktop... and handles everything I've thrown at it. Best purchase of my life. Thanks! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

I bought this laptop for college work and to this day, I have to admit that nothing beats a well-made Thinkpad. I have owned multiple Thinkpads over the years, and finally decided on getting yet another one for the next few years. After debating between a T480s and this T580, I decided on the T580 due to being able to have a larger, more vivid screen (4K vs 2K), and 8GB more RAM in a still extremely portable and quite light 14.4" frame but 15" screen. My configuration was with 32GB of RAM, an i7-8650u vPro, 4K UHD screen, Nvidia GTX MX150 2GB Graphics, and 512GB of SSD. When it comes to the T580, I must say that beyond anything, make sure to buy the larger 72wh 6-cell cylindrical battery. It doesn't add much weight, but it does add so much more usage time. THIS LARGER BATTERY IS A MUST HAVE, DO NOT BUY THIS LAPTOP WITHOUT IT! Weight is honestly great. the laptop barely even weighs 4 pounds, even with all the RAM and SSD I have on it. It is thin, but yet has all the ports you will need, including two USB-C/Thunderbolt 3, and Ethernet, the staple of Thinkpads. The laptop does not weigh much at all, especially compared to the earlier i7-vPro generations, which were similar to concrete slabs, and their power supplies being bricks in size and weight. The 65W power supply provided with the T580 with charging through USB-C is extremely small, comparable to a smartphone's charging brick, which just makes the portability of this laptop even better. I would say don't buy the UHD screen unless you are really bent on it. Though beautiful and crisp, it does really consume a lot of battery life. That said, even with the drain of 4K, I still get 10+ hours of light usage of the laptop, and 4-6 hours of heavy full load usage, which the latter metric is quite remarkable. With just a 1920x1080 screen, the battery life you would receive is unimaginable, over 20 hours of usability. So for the sake of usability, go for the FHD screen, but it truly is up to you. Battery life will decrease as the life of the battery degrades over time, but rest assured it is quite decent even with a massive 4K screen, and would be insane with an FHD display. Now onto graphics. The MX150 is the dedicated GPU meant to replace the last generation 940MX. Though not a behemoth when it comes to graphics, (as obviously this is not a dedicated gaming laptop, it's a Thinkpad), the MX150 is ABLE TO HANDLE ALL CURRENT GENERATION AAA GAMES AT STEADY FRAMERATES. This is amazing. I can play games such as GTA V, Doom, Cuphead, and Rocket Leage with ease! And with the larger battery, you can game on the go. You can play GTA V at HIGH settings (since the game is so well optimized) for about 6+ hours straight on just battery life alone! And when you are not gaming, the GPU is disabled, so it does not eat battery life and make noise. This is another reason that I have to admit that the T580 does just about anything. Now how about noise? When you are destroying a game such as GTA V and using 100% of your GPU and more than 30% of your CPU at the same time, you will hear the fans turn on, and heat will very quickly dissipate from the left side and bottom of the laptop. But NO COIL WHINE. No high-pitched, unbearable coil noise will ever touch your ears, so rest assured, the fans are all you will hear, which are honestly quiet. They make very minimal noise, just the slight pushing of air. Overall, the T580 can be configured to be a beast of a laptop. Extremely high battery life WITH THE LARGER BATTERY, WHICH IS A MUST!
First and foremost, this review is written in the context of someone upgrading from a Thinkpad W550s. Bought a custom spec'd T580, with the high range i5 processor, discrete graphics, 1TB SSD, and 32GB RAM. My order was shipped after a week and arrived shortly thereafter. The laptop was packed well inside - nothing to complain about on that front. Performance for the most part was what I expected - fast. To give a little background, my office work has me dealing with spreadsheets most of the time. On that front, this laptop easily accomplishes all tasks thrown at it, even with 40 or so browser tabs open at a time. The numeric pad certainly helps and was consciously considered in the purchase of this T580 and my old W550s. Why the discrete graphics card? I love photography and do a lot of RAW file editing on Lightroom. I also edit 4K videos shot from action cams and need all the help I can get. Very occasionally, I play games, too. I haven't tried the last one with this laptop, but it has breezed through the first two so far. Why i5 and not i7, then? I wanted as long a battery life as possible, provided graphics performance is delivered. For what I do, the high line i5 is more than enough. So where did that one star go? The laptop was delivered with somewhat of a defective keyboard. The space bar needed to be firmly pressed to work reliably, or else the textI type wouldlook like this. It greatly slowed down my typing, and rather than deal with the hassles of return logistics, I just removed the space bar panel and stuck thick tape on the underside, where it contacts the actuator. Problem solved. All in all, a great purchase. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
