In my opinion, this is the slimmest and lightest a 15" laptop with a full numpad needs to be. I can't give up the dual battery setup and the upgradeable RAM and SSD. The T590 has sacrificed too much to gain a smaller, lighter footprint. The T-series are designed to be workhorses, not Chromebooks. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
I have owned several Lenovo ThinkPads and really appreciate Lenovo's T580 with the UHD display and extended battery. The speed, capability, durability, ability to use extended batterys (19+hours) and longevity of the T580 is simply outstanding. Thank you Lenovo for a great laptop! Quick and snappy, the SSD is super fast. Don't know why I waited so long to get one. The screen size is just right for word processing, video viewing and web browsing. Great powerhouse in a portable laptop. Not heavy or bulky at all. The battery performance is about 6 1/2 hours before needing to plug in. Can easily have multiple tabs open and several office dos (Word, Excel and PPT) without a burp or freeze. The backlit keyboard is a must for those long business trips burning the midnight oil. Happy with the purchase. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
This is by far the most powerful and lightest laptop I have every used. It has all the ports I need to control my telescope and camera. With windows 10 pro I can export interface to a other systems so I can remotely control the laptop once I have connected it to my telescope and DSLR camera. (I don't have to sit outside while I take celestial photos). Below is an example of a photo I took last night using the new ThinkPad T580. I really like the lighted keyboard when I initially am setting up the scope for photos in the dark. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
I started out with a lenovo ideapad U430 in 2013, and needed to upgrade in the beginning of 2018 because the system had advanced wear and tear. I'm a university student how spends at least 3-4 hours a day on my laptop on even my breaks. Much more during the calendar school year. The reason I went with the t580 was for the dual battery system. The MX 150 mobile graphics card is a bit of a boost, but the purpose of it is to help with general rendering for my research. This is not a gaming GPU by any means as even an older desktop gtx 1050 has better benchmarks. I also went with a 256 PCiE ssd, which is great for quiet and quick use. Even the basic option for the screen is crisp, and I regularly leave it on 50-60% brightness. The keys are a dream, and typing has some robust feedback for each key. The heat sinking for the laptop is really quiet good. The left side vents may become a little warm, but this is only due to the device efficiently pulling heat from other locations to excrete out the vent. The matte finish and durable plastic case give this laptop an easy-to-keep-clean look, and does a very good job protecting the sensitive inner components. I have the the external 6 cell 72 Wh battery option, and this paired with the 3 cell 32 Wh internal battery gives me about 9-10 hours of heavy workstation use, and about 14-15 of anything else. To note, I have to i5 with vPro option. I like to play the occasional light game like civilization, and this battery setup will give 4-5 hours of gameplay on a full charge. Better yet, I will be buying an additional 6 cell to utilize the hotswap battery feature and extend my mobile working time. The plethora of ports comes in handy, as not all conference rooms have the same hookups. While not many carry USB C hookups, I like the exceptional data transfer speeds from this laptop. The wifi module is a bit of a dream as well. I picked up usable wifi from a winery 60 yards away. I happened to know the owners and the password, so I logged in to test it. I didnt need the mobile 4g option, so I opted out of it. Ultimately. The durability, versatility, wifi range, and battery longevity make this an absolutely ideal laptop for any university student, and I assume, any business associate who needs a laptop that can fit their busy and mobile lifestyle. This is by far the best laptop I've ever owned. I wanted an IBM Thinkpad after I saw people using them in the field as a child.. a rugged, professional workstation for power users. Lenovo has kept that 90s IBM heritage alive while at the same time keeping with the line's overall trademark - cramming all the patest features and technologies into a sleek, minimal design. I've had it for a few weeks... Since then, I've used it for Laravel web development, music production with FL Studio, digital art using PaintTool SAI, school assignments with Office, played Steam games, and taken it on a trip. The thing takes like 4 seconds to reach the desktop... and handles everything I've thrown at it. Best purchase of my life. Thanks! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
Great computer. Love it have been wanting a ThinkPad for some time now. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
First and foremost, this review is written in the context of someone upgrading from a Thinkpad W550s. Bought a custom spec'd T580, with the high range i5 processor, discrete graphics, 1TB SSD, and 32GB RAM. My order was shipped after a week and arrived shortly thereafter. The laptop was packed well inside - nothing to complain about on that front. Performance for the most part was what I expected - fast. To give a little background, my office work has me dealing with spreadsheets most of the time. On that front, this laptop easily accomplishes all tasks thrown at it, even with 40 or so browser tabs open at a time. The numeric pad certainly helps and was consciously considered in the purchase of this T580 and my old W550s. Why the discrete graphics card? I love photography and do a lot of RAW file editing on Lightroom. I also edit 4K videos shot from action cams and need all the help I can get. Very occasionally, I play games, too. I haven't tried the last one with this laptop, but it has breezed through the first two so far. Why i5 and not i7, then? I wanted as long a battery life as possible, provided graphics performance is delivered. For what I do, the high line i5 is more than enough. So where did that one star go? The laptop was delivered with somewhat of a defective keyboard. The space bar needed to be firmly pressed to work reliably, or else the textI type wouldlook like this. It greatly slowed down my typing, and rather than deal with the hassles of return logistics, I just removed the space bar panel and stuck thick tape on the underside, where it contacts the actuator. Problem solved. All in all, a great purchase. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
Purchased for personal use after being impressed by an older model used at work. Keyboard is without a doubt the best available on any laptop. Also feels much more solid than competitors models. Only downside is lack of ports, with just 2 standard usb ports. This essentially requires the use of a dock, which has changed from the older models and the Lenovo website was less than clear on which docks are compatible with each model.
