I gotta say I wasn't expecting much from this gun safe other than an inexpensive quick solution but what I got was a very well designed, thought out, heavy duty gun safe that I can say I expect to last me years. The capacity is perfect for two hand guns and a least a few spare magazines or plenty of valuables. The mounting plate is also real nice as well as the intrusion alarm. And without a doubt Walmart has the best price for this product, I shopped around for about a week going from store to store and site to site searching for the best price and walmart won out every time. And the Site to Store service was VERY quick. I ordered this late on the 12/9 and got a received confirmation on 12/12! Thats simply amazing for free! And it was great because I could pick it up after work instead of taking a chance with the UPS guy.
Just got the safe today and it seems to be very well constructed and I'm very glad I went with this one rather than the one that cost twice as much. The safe really doesn't hold much more than my M&P 40 and a few magazines, but that is exactly what I wanted. I took the shelf out, really too flimsey for anything and its in the way for a pistol on the bottom (scraps knuckles). This needs to be stocked in the stores, it takes way too long to get it by site to store.
While the other reviews are helpful and accurate, I'd just like to add a few points. It came with 4 keys, which I didn't expect. The cylindrical pin lock looks more secure than the simple disk tumbler I expected. It comes with batteries, too. This is a very solid safe - not cheap sheet metal. For the most part, the interior is well padded. I can fit my 5.5" ruger MKIII in fairly easy, but I don't think a handgun with a longer barrel would have fit. If you are worried about dings, you may want to add a little padding to cover the base plate locking pins & the wing nuts. If you remove the shelf, pad the metal shelf brackets. The interior light is a little dim, but nice to have in an all-black interior, especially in my closet. The extra baseplates are very reasonably priced, $12 shipped. This is a very good price. Since it is heavy, choose ship-to-store for free shipping. It was delivered earlier than promised (arriving perhaps a week after ordering).
I finally received mine yesterday after waiting over two weeks for the ship-to-store. My first impressions are good. During the long wait I read other reviews and expected a fairly good product. Although, a couple reviews struck me with concern - The Infamous flimsy battery tray. Luckily, my tray fits perfectly. My unit came with wing-nuts that screw the battery tray to the top of the safe. I also wrapped a little electrical tape around the tray to hold the batteries in tight and help prevent any scratches. Maybe the “wing-nut screw to the top” is the answer to prior complaints? The door does open fast, but it's not really that bad since I have my thumb ready to catch it. Programming took only a few short minutes. Without a doubt the “beeps” were turned off!!!! I haven't played with any additional access codes (you're allowed three), nor have I turned on the motion alarm at this time. An additional mod I did was pinch in the internal tray brace and place electrical tape over the metal to prevent scratches. The tape also prevents the tray from sliding forward and backwards. On the top tray I have my XD 45-ACP Compact, an additional extended 45 mag and a box of 45 Auto Remington Golden Sabers. On the lower level I have my snub 357 in its IWB holster (towards the back), my XD Sub-Compact 9, an additional extended 9 mag and a box of 9mm Remington Golden Sabers. In short, this small safe has a rather large capacity. At this time I do not have children, but my fiancé does have a nephew that comes to the house occasionally. I feel much better now having this safe and accessing the guns is a breeze using the code I selected. I plan to mount the safe with the supplied mounting plate, but haven't decided where to place it just yet. For $60 plus I'm completely satisfied and contemplating ordering an additional safe for placement on the first floor – (just in case – ha ha)
This safe was recommended to me over the GunVault, a competing brand. The GunVault cost twice as much and has reliability issues, so I went with this one. This safe does look a little cheap, but it performs flawlessly. It will do the job of keeping a handgun (or valuables) easily accessible, but still away from children. Bear in mind that this is not going to stop a burglar. Its job is to keep out curious kids or other household members, and it does this job very well. I installed it in my nighstand. I attached some photos for you to see. I recommend not using the base that comes with it unless you must have portability. The base makes for a weaker connection. Use carriage bolts if possible. Also, leave the included silica gel inside the safe. They will absorb any moisture. My only complaint with this safe is that the door slams when it opens. I attached a rubber stopper to the top of the front door and the issue is gone. Since I use my safe for a gun, the included plastic shelf is a problem since I have big hands and cannot easily grab the gun with the shelf installed. Easy fix: I just left it out. Overall, this is an EXCELLENT value for the money, and I recommend it.
Before I purchased this safe, I read many of the reviews that others have said about it. They were all correct. This safe is actually really made well,and have discovered that it is actually cheaper than some sports and gun catalogs have listed the same safe for. I feel more at ease, knowing that my kids will not be able to access my handgun, even if they come across in it our closet. This safe has an alarm which you can set sensitivity of motion that is actually pretty loud. I would only suggest using this safe for only 1 hand gun, as 2 may be a little cramped.
This is one of the best prices I've seen for this safe. It works as advertised. Set up was not difficult, but you must pay attention to the procedure. Never loose your manual. I appreciate the portable capability, however, the mounting panel appears to have been designed for horizontal surfaces. I have my safe mounted to a wall, and the safe is secure, but fits loosely to the mounting panel. Not a big deal for those mounting to a horizontal surface. I really like this product, and it's a great deal for the price.
The safe is easy to program and operate. Make sure to select the "mute" function for the keypad because the beeps are way too loud when you press a button. The door swings open really fast. The metal handle feels cheap and makes carrying the safe awkward. The removable shelf is flimsy and moves too easily inside the safe.
I bougth this safe about 2 years ago now. I use the safe a few times a day. I am able to fit two guns and extra mags in it with no problem. I am even able to put my off duty gun in its holster on the top shelf and duty weapon on bottom. After a few months of having the safe I ordered another. The instructions were easy for me and mounting was just as easy. The batteries last over a year in the safe I use daily and I have not replaced the other units yet. The plastic shelf is a little flimsy but has not dropped or broke after two years. The only reason I didn't give it a top overall rating is the door could be a little thicker but it is a secure safe.
Works great as a personal home defense weapon safe, it is loud (beeps when you key the code) but this would let you know if your children were playing with it. The bad part is that you can't discretely get at your weapon because of the noise and if you miss your code you are locked out for 10 seconds.
