Gotta Have It!

I updated from a Canon SD550 to this and sure am glad I did! No regrets, easy to use, my 70+ oldman was even capable of shooting pics and vids when I was in front of the camera, yes, it's that easy! 12 mega pixels is plenty for an everyday camera, easy to use computer photo edit pics and the image stays clear. As with most optical and digital zoom cameras the optical is going to yield the best quality and moving of from a 3.0 optical zoom on my old camera to 4.0 on this is a great plus. Still fits in my pocket and is light weight with great shots! Albeit it's not a professional camera but keep in mind that's not what you want or are buying, plus this does more! You can shoot video, on most digital SLR's that's not an option. The low light function amazed me, I was in the dark yet it took a great pic. This is a great camera that easily captures the moment during the moment without any hassle or fuss, you deserve this camera and should own one without question, it's great!

Got this camera 8 months ago as a P&S companion to my 5D MK II. Easy to configure and use, small, light and has a great battery life. Does very well at night/in the dark outdoors and snaps of people at parties. For me, this camera has all the features I want in a small device without any I don't want or need.

I just love this camera , very easy to handle , what I like is the big screen and the touch screen was so nice I let my granddaughter take pictures and she had a ball learning to erase photos we did not like , battery life is really good and the wait for the battery to charge is not bad also 1 1/2 hours to charge , we were on vaction in Colorado and I pointed the camera out the window and it took the most amazing pictures of the mountains could not have done any better just standing still I would tell any one to buy the Cannon SD980IS I just love this camera

About a month ago I purchased the SD980IS for my wife. she likes to carry a camera in her back pocket or her purse when she has it. This camera replaced an SD1000 which had replaced an SD500. We decided to check out the features on this camera. We took Pictures in ISO3200 on a walk at 10PM. It was pretty dark. I could not believe we could even take a picture without a flash in this light. WOW, what a surprise. The pictures were not good enough for printing, but for saving a memory it was great. Auto and Program modes offered many choices and the resulting pictures were unbelievable; clear and in great focus. Indoor shots at a school concert (no flash allowed) came out super even with a shutter speed of 1/15 second, hand held. I did brace the camera using my knee, but this would not have been possible with SD1000. It starts up very fast. Comes up in what ever mode you left it in when you turned it off. The touch screen and camera tilt features are a very nice addition. This camera is so much more than the SD1000. It's just super. And the 24mm wide angle lens gets it all in. You need the 5x optical zoom to get in close and it does just that. Bottom line: This camera is far above my expectations and a hugh jump up from my SD1000.

Overall very nice, but too much image compression.

Overall this is a fun camera to use and the touchscreen works well (for my wife). Skin tones are excellent, even indoors. It has many advanced features like photo stitch and color swap, along with good pictures in "P" mode especially (where you can control the ISO). Some users have mentioned the lack of 3:2 dimensions, but the camera allows you to see the actual 3:2 area in the screen with narrow grey boxes on the top and bottom (have to set this function on in the menu). The HD movie mode is what really sold me on this, especially with the wide screen which allows for direct play on wide screen TVs. Some Tips: 1) Outdoor contrasty - keep flash on for fill flash 2) Kids/Pet mode is excellent for skin tones 3) Touchscreen focus is useless 4) To control shutter speed in "P" mode, change the ISO setting. This allowed me some flexibility over shutter speed in action shots 5) Choose "Vivid" or "Positive" color mode (adjustable in the "P" mode for better saturation (scenics) Would like to see: 1) Superfine compression 2) HD video "optical" zoom mode 3) Flash compensation adjustment 4) Aperature and/or Shutter speed control

I was really confused before I bought this camera, I got lot of choices but I really wanted to go for canon powershot. I came through this SD980 IS and I compared with other brands and I found more features in SD980 with less price and good quality of photos. I have read lot of reviews for this camera about poor low light performance. but I haven't got any problem with this camera in low lights. Keep little microfiber cloth with this camera as LCD screen will catch lot of fingerprints.

Poor low light quality

The overall quality of this camera is excellent. Great screen...easy functions with lots of options. I have a semi pro camera but didn't want to tote it around on vacation when going in the boat etc. The idea was to leave my really good camera in the room when we were going to places that the good camera could get damaged. I returned this canon because the quality just wasn't there for low light, Sunset, or Sunrise shots. Even if I use their function settings or adjusted the ISO etc. the shot still wasn't worth saving to the computer.....just not enough detail. I guess I'll be toting the 5d (which is awesome by the way) and using my son's cheapy camera near the water.

Disappointing performance

This is the third Canon I have owned (in a row) and only replaces our last one after it had been left outdoor on our son's swing for 2 weeks last fall. Let me be clear...I was ECSTATIC over receiving this as a Christmas present. It offered every feature I was looking for in a small, light-weight chassis. I was thrilled over the HD video recording, compact size, and long list of features. Then I tried using it. In anything but decent lighting the pictures were ridiculously noisy (ISO 800 and up). I missed several excellent photo ops because I simply could not get a good shot with the available light, even using the flash. I also found the flash metering to cause overexposure at least as often as it helped. The touch screen seems to be a completely marketing-driven option, providing little in the way of real-world usability. The interface is clunky and I found myself defaulting to the buttons and dials to make sense of settings. Other frills like shaking the camera to change pictures while reviewing may seem neat until you try handing the camera to someone else and they say, "Uh, this isn't the picture you were telling me about." Many things worked very well, such as start-up response and battery performance. The HD movie mode was so-so, again requiring bright light to produce anything approaching good resolution. In the end the camera went back to the local dealer within two weeks. Truly, this is a swing-and-a-miss for Canon. On paper it looks fantastic; in practice it is sorely lacking. In a store this afternoon I warned another customer away from this model. For an undemanding everyday shooter it should function well, though at this price and from this maker I would certainly expect and demand better. I will be trying the S90 next, though I am still debating between that and the Panny LX3.

I had an old Canon Elph that was a 4MP that I took everywhere for years. It took fast, sharp pictures that rivaled my SLR even when enlarging. I loved it (and miss it as I gave it to a friend). Last Christmas, I thought I would upgrade to this 10MP Elph with touch screen thinking it would be even better. Truth is after using it, I found that there is a noticeable delay when shutter is pressed and the 10MP photos are rarely sharp. Also awkward is the touch screen. No matter how you try to hold it, your finger will touch something on the back which will activate/depress something undesirable. So this is a major flaw. I would rather do without the touch screen and just use the zoom lever on the front (which is what I use anyways because it is easier). The 2 selling points of this particular model of large MP and touch screen were a huge let down. I will most likely give this to a friend and buy another point-n-shoot model that is faster and no touch screen after reading many reviews. I still love Canon Elphs... just not this model. CM

Needs firmware update for auto mode
(2)
Reviewed in the USA on 2009-09-19T17:00:00

As many reviewers noticed this camera takes blurry/noisy pictures in auto mode. There is nothing wrong with the components which are similar to other competing products. The issue is that the firmware chooses high ISO settings by default to avoid "shaky" pictures, at the expense of sharpness. Canon needs to publish a firmware update to fix this issue, or at least make that a configurable choice. Also the default compression algorithm tries to compress too much (much more than the "very fine" details mode in the older SD800. Pictures us less space but are less sharp. Again the "very fine" mode needs to be reintroduced in a firmware update, for these of us who'd rather have larger pictures with more details.
